Here nor there
On the issue of money, he may make more per year, but he is not going to get any more in gauranteed money then he has now. Depending on how he does this year the pot may be sweetened even more. One could make the case he is in a stronger position to make more money long term staying at ISU for a while. If he bolts for the NBA now and it doesn't work out, he could be out of a job in 3 years. Obviously he'll always have a job in coaching, but it's not a slam dunk that going to the NBA is whats best financially right now. So...like you said...not going to be about money.
IRRC Ford is the second highest in the conference at $2.3 million/year. After this season Fred should get bumped up to at least 2.5/year.

Actually I have it on good authority that Fred is positioning himself to become the next Gilbert High coach. Wants to get a head start before the twins get there.

Fred can coach in the NBA at any point, now, 5 years, 10 years etc.. He's got one shot to coach at ISU and that is right now. He leaves and there is no going back likely. Fred will be here for another 5-10 years. Then bolt for the NBA. His kids love Gilbert and his kids could likely play for him at ISU. It's not about the $$, Fred is a millionaire. Multi millionaire. Sure he could make a couple more million a year but he wouldn't leave for that reason. He will leave because of the challenge and IMO right now he hasn't achieved what he set out to achieve yet with his alma matter. This program is just at the tip of becoming a Top 10 program year in and year out and to leave now would set it back quite a bit and he knows this.

We both agree that he isn't leaving after this year.

That being said, he will leave for the right opportunity at the right time. It won't necessarily be based on any pre-conceived accomplishment. If you think he is here until he gets a final four, you will be disappointed in the near future. The money is better and that speaks to everyone. But money isn't everything, there is also fit. He knows the NBA game is a good fit for him - no recruiting, no NCAA crap. Just coaching basketball.

If Minnesota comes open in 3-4 years, I will be nervous. But not now.

I disagree when you say that he can just go to the nba whenever he wants.
While that maybe true in a sense I don't get the feeling that Fred would just take any job in the nba. Therefore, if he truly has nba aspirations, he's gonna take the job that is the best fit. That job may open up next year or 10 years from now but I do feel he will leave when that right job opens up

Outside of Pop, the longest tenured coaches in the NBA are like five years. The average is probably 2. Almost half the franchises had new coaches at the beginning of this year. Fred could coach here for 10 more years and still coach in the NBA for decades. I have a feeling a job he would be very comfortable with would be available at some point down the line if he doesn't jump at the T-Wolves job if its offered. Hell, he could probably coach at ISU for the next decade and it would open up 2 or 3 more times. To me, the only thing that would be a game changer is if he gets a chance to coach a really good team with special talent. Say somehow he ended up with the opportunity to coach a team with Lebron or Durant and have a chance at historic runs. Those are the type of opportunities that would be genuinely rare and tough to pass up. And no, I don't put D-Rose and the Bulls in that same category. The way D-Rose plays he is an injury waiting to happen.

Living in Mpls I have heard rumors that after Adelman leaves Fred would be the first choice to replace him. I have also heard rumors that Flip Saunders maybe setting himself up to be the next coach (he recently gave up his GM duties and his old Wizard contract payout may now be up). My hope was always that Fred would stay until his kids were out of high school, possibly even coach his boys in college at ISU. Finger are crossed that Flip takes over for Rick A. for a few years. After Fred accomplishes everything he wants to at ISU he can make the jump to the NBA if he even wants to at that point.
