Mrs. Velo had her sports orthopedist recommend that she use it on her knee to help stabilize the knee and kneecap for healing. She didn't bring it up or mention it, he did. If it is just snake oil, they have some in the medical profession snowed as well. Frankly, we have both been skeptical of it, too, so we were surprised when he told her that.

They had a booth at the Chicago Marathon Expo last year and would do a taping for free. I was having some issues with plantar faciatis so decided to give it a try and have them tape me up. I don't think it makes a huge difference, but there is SOME noticible difference.

At the booth they said it basically acts as an additional ligmaent or tendon, providing more support.

This is my understanding of it as well. It went mainstream after the last Olympics when Walsh wore it to support tendinitis in her shoulder. It's kind of like compression socks (which I love). What they "say" is the compression adds stability and increases blood flow. Both of these products are still new and it will likely be years before the fad is either proven right or wrong...but I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

(How many "balance crystals" are still being sold????)

glad to hear it helped your daughter. do you think she had issues with her neck - muscle, vertebrate or tendons? or all three?

If i had to make an educated guess id say muscle ... Guessing the strength on that one side didnt develop as quickly as the other so she started favoring it due to comfort ... Glad we noticed it as early as we did, as the dr told us about some of the extreme cases she has seen and the extent of the therapy involved in those ...

This is a pretty old school approach to patello-femoral issues.

Most research I've seen says it stretches to the point of no benefit after about 20 minutes of your normal movement patterns. After that it can still provide your body with extra awareness of what it is doing and a little placebo effect.

Torticulis can be caused by a few different things but the two most common are the SCM on one side is much stronger than the other so the head turns towards the strong side. The other cause is a weak nerve that causes imbalanced muscle tone causing the same affect as one muscle being stronger than the other.

The kinesio tape is used to hold muscles in correct positions and give it some extra support. There really isn't much to the increased blood flow affect.

I wore it for a week for a shoulder issue and it did aid in my recovery. However, it left me with something resembling a burn irritation on the back of my scapula. Fluid built up under small layer of skin at irritation site and proceeded to bubble and burst. Oozed for several days before that layer of skin became dead and flaked aways (like sunburn).

I'll ask for the sling next time.

It used for relieving pain and stabilizing joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion.

There is a lot of scepticism when it comes to kinesio tape, but when I see top athletes use it - like Mario Balotelli:

... there must be some kind of effect. It have used it myself with great succes.

Isn't Mario Batali a chef? What would he need to tape up?

his stirring arm.

Yeah, I guess you'd hate to get a cramp right in the middle of making a delicious pasta sauce, causing it to burn. That's almost enough to require hari kari.

Can you just use the standard white athletic tape as a direct replacement?

Yeah, its all like, "im going to show you how to make some nice artisan bread", and then WHAMMY Bobby Flay shows up and and power bombs you through a table.

Or then Masaharu Morimoto sneaks in and hits you with a frickin karate chop to the face. No wonder he needs all that tape.
