3 people in a row make the same point, great, they had a coach who led them to the promised land for a period of time, not in the same league as basketball programs like ucla, kentucky, north carolina, kansas, and thus not comparable to notre dame as far as national brand goes.

They havent yet fallen as far, but they will over time, and that's the analogy he was making.

ND last won a title in 1988 and haven't seriously contended for one since 1993, yet the media still falls all over themselves hoping they will be relevant again, they are constantly ranked in preseason polls when they have no business being there, they still pull in top recruiting classes, NBC keeps renewing their contract, and every major conference is basically on their knees begging them to join.

Right or wrong, there isn't a program in the country that commands the national attention that Notre Dame does, and that's not changing any time soon.

The media might still be falling all over themselves for ND, but is anyone besides older die hard Catholics watching or even caring anymore?

I'm a die-hard Catholic who couldn't care less about Notre Dame. They are one of many Catholic institutions across this country.

Yeah, being Catholic, growing up in all Catholic area, no one cares about ND. In fact, most people I know, hate ND. I think people overstate the Catholic connection.

I hope you didn't take offense to me.... Other than my avatar.

Is there any market research on the ND fan base and their demographics?

I know a lot of Catholics that have ND as a number 2 college team.

Same here, I'm Catholic and grew up in a very predominant Catholic area and can't think of a single ND fan there. However I now live in a predominant Lutheran area and are friends with two guys that are Lutheran, grew up in Iowa and are die hard ND fans. One has never been to an ND game and the other has. Go figure.

I think the Catholic to ND connection is more of a Chicago and further east thing.

Edit- Forgot to add that I despise ND.

Agree 100%. I grew up in a pretty much all Catholic area, and I didn't know a single Notre Dame fan. Everyone was Iowa or ISU.

ND fans watch them and so do ND haters, just hoping they lose. Either way they get ratings, and NBC keeps renewing the contract.

Actually, they do not. It is rumored that NBC will not renew after their current deal ends after 2015 and go hard after the Big Ten's tier one and two rights.

I could be wrong, but I do believe the Big Ten's Tier 2 rights are part of the Big Ten Network.

I know two different Catholic families that go out to a Notre Dame game a couple times a year. Just because you don't personally know a Notre Dame fan doesn't mean the Catholic connection is overstated. There is a reason the Big 12, Big 10, and ACC all want them to join.

Where's all the good little realignment tidbits that usually appear on Sunday nights? How am I going to kill time at work on Monday if there's no ethereal evidence of FSU and Clemson jumping from the ACC to the BIGXII?!?
