Well, young Jim was a cabinboy on the HMS Reliant. His ship was attacked by privateers under the infamous pirate captain Bluebeard. All souls on the Relaint were killed save Jim and the ship's cook. They were given the choice of walking the plank or joining the privateers. Both chose the hard life of a pirate. The cook didn't last but a few days when the other crew members ate his food. Jim worked a hard life as a swabbie on the ship but learned to use weapons as every pirate must. The ship was badly overloaded so there would be enough crew to overpower the crews of any ship they attacked. 2 years into Jim's life on the pirate ship he lost his eye to a knife fight. Jim killed the other pirate and his status on the crew immediately rose. During his life as a pirate Jim had a knack for wit and would often use sarcasm to taunt others on the crew. Many were slow and didn't grasp that they were being mocked by the quick witted boy. Unfortunately 3 years later Jim was himself killed while attacking a merchant ship. A frigate of the Royal Navy caught the two ships in mid battle and with a single cannon volley hit the powder stores and sent the pirate ship and all of her crew to Davy's Locker.

The real Jimlad has been retired fifteen years and living like a king in Patagonia." Thank you. Then he explained that the name was the important thing for inspiring the necessary fear. You see, no one would surrender to the dread pirate Westley. So we sailed ashore, took on an entirely new crew, and he stayed aboard for a while as first mate, all the time calling me Jimlad. Once the crew believed, he left the ship, and I have been Jimlad ever since. Except now that we're together, I shall retire and hand the name over to someone else. Is everything clear to you?
