Maybe you're right. Maybe Urban Meyer looked at Tom Herman's play calling and stats and said:
"You know what? He really doesn't do anything for me. But since I'm going to build my team around defense, I really don't want to score that many points anyway. He seems to have proven that the one thing his offenses can't possibly do is score, and he's excellent at making sure they fumble and throw pick 6s in the redzone. That'll really sharpen up my defense to put them into a little hole where they have to score just to stay in the game. Herman's the man for me!"
Maybe. I'll have to think about this a little more.
I agree with everything you've said, man. This Jaretac fellow is a fool. He tried arguing a little bit ago that Herman must have just interviewed very well for the job, because his stats here at ISU weren't that impressive. As if stats are the most important thing in hiring a new coach.
Urban Meyer is one of the greatest football coaches out there right now. He's got 2 national championships and a share for a third at Utah. The guy flat out knows football, and knows what it takes to win. Anyone who sits here on their computer and says "well his stats weren't that good, thank god Urban took Herman off our hands" is a flat out fool. Urban said in his press conference when he took the job that he planned on establishing the best coaching staff in all of college football.
In case people are forgetting, Urban didn't coach this year, he worked for ESPN as a college football analyst. He spent the offseason traveling around the country and observing different teams' practices. This guy's only job this year was to watch as much college football as he could and analyze teams. I really don't think I'm going way out on a limb here by saying that he probably had a pretty darn good idea of who he wanted to hire for his coordinators, once he accepted the job. I really doubt that he was just sitting around in his office, without a clue of who he wanted as his offensive coordinator. And then all of a sudden, he gets a call from this random fellow named Tom Herman. He decided to take the interview out of pity, and the fact that they share the same agent, and all of a sudden, boom, he hires this random guy who he had never even heard before.
Finally, OSU has had Fickell as their temporary coach for the entire year. OSU made it obvious that they wanted to hire outside for the coming years, and seeing that Urban was from Columbus, I'm guessing he had a decent idea that he may take this job a while back. Knowing that, I think it's definitely possible that he could have been keeping a close eye on coaches this season, to try to determine who he would want as his assistants. Having said that, isn't it possible that his agent may have said "hey, you should check out one of my clients, Tom Herman."
This is complete speculation on my part, but I have a real hard time buying into what some posters are saying about Urban Meyer randomly hiring some ISU OC who is "supposedly" being pushed out the door by Paul Rhoads, for having ISU at the bottom of the Big 12 in offensive statistics. Sorry, I just can't rationalize why one of the greatest football coaches in the country would do something like that.
PS. I'm going off what other posters have said about them sharing an agent, I couldn't find who Tom Herman's agent is anywhere.
