Re: This Will Unravel Fast
The other key will be existing Big 10 schools. Like it or not- the University of Iowa, Board of Regents and political powers to be in Iowa could have a strong lobbying influence to push ISU's case. I also think President Geoffrey's ties to PSU, President Jiske at Purdue and Jamie Pollard's connections at Wisconsin could help a lot. I would hope all these would factor much more than the state of Kansas saying KU/KSU are a package deal.
I wish I had your confidence in the idea that Iowa would have our backs. I'm afraid that Iowa State is an island. The institutions and people that should be with us, do not seem to be there. At the top of that list last summer -- U of I.
It should be a fairly easy concept for all Iowans to understand, and especially Iowa fans, that Iowa State's well-being is important to us all. Having two major universities in top-level conferences is important in multiple ways for our economic and social vitality. This has been explained many times. But, simply for Iowa fans, they should realize that Iowa State helps make their program better. For example, in the 60s and 70s, Iowa football was horrible. It wasn't until they were forced to play Iowa State annually that they began to upgrade their team. I have to believe that there was some additional pressure and interest brought to bear because Iowa State had success in those early years of the rivalry.
Instead of taking the time to understand how Iowa State is a benefit to us all, the media and others seem very quick to make excuses. I've heard too many times that Iowa as no clout in the Big 10 and couldn't help even if they wished. That's a cop out. I've heard others claim that it isn't their job in the media to "promote" Iowa State. Another cop out.
Ask yourself one question. If the situation were reversed, if the Big 10 were dissolving, would the feeling in the state be the same? My guess is that we would be hearing multiple calls for those in authority to do whatever it takes to save Iowa. We'd probably be hearing from all sectors of the media.
We're not hearing much of anything other than on sports radio and message boards. Even there, nobody is really promoting Iowa State. It's been, for the most part, simply reporting on events. In some cases, I've even heard the talk show hosts seeming to take joy in the event.
I hope I'm wrong about U of I. I know if it were the other way around I would want Iowa State to stand by it's in-state rival and fellow regent institution.
