Would the Pac12 really go to 16 if it doesn't include Texas? I'm not sure they would.

I think all the smoke coming from OU is an attempt to force Texas to jump with them, but if Texas doesn't bite, then the Big 12 will live on (at least long enough to go through all this again next year).

Re: This Will Unravel Fast

The other key will be existing Big 10 schools. Like it or not- the University of Iowa, Board of Regents and political powers to be in Iowa could have a strong lobbying influence to push ISU's case. I also think President Geoffrey's ties to PSU, President Jiske at Purdue and Jamie Pollard's connections at Wisconsin could help a lot. I would hope all these would factor much more than the state of Kansas saying KU/KSU are a package deal.

I wish I had your confidence in the idea that Iowa would have our backs. I'm afraid that Iowa State is an island. The institutions and people that should be with us, do not seem to be there. At the top of that list last summer -- U of I.

It should be a fairly easy concept for all Iowans to understand, and especially Iowa fans, that Iowa State's well-being is important to us all. Having two major universities in top-level conferences is important in multiple ways for our economic and social vitality. This has been explained many times. But, simply for Iowa fans, they should realize that Iowa State helps make their program better. For example, in the 60s and 70s, Iowa football was horrible. It wasn't until they were forced to play Iowa State annually that they began to upgrade their team. I have to believe that there was some additional pressure and interest brought to bear because Iowa State had success in those early years of the rivalry.

Instead of taking the time to understand how Iowa State is a benefit to us all, the media and others seem very quick to make excuses. I've heard too many times that Iowa as no clout in the Big 10 and couldn't help even if they wished. That's a cop out. I've heard others claim that it isn't their job in the media to "promote" Iowa State. Another cop out.

Ask yourself one question. If the situation were reversed, if the Big 10 were dissolving, would the feeling in the state be the same? My guess is that we would be hearing multiple calls for those in authority to do whatever it takes to save Iowa. We'd probably be hearing from all sectors of the media.

We're not hearing much of anything other than on sports radio and message boards. Even there, nobody is really promoting Iowa State. It's been, for the most part, simply reporting on events. In some cases, I've even heard the talk show hosts seeming to take joy in the event.

I hope I'm wrong about U of I. I know if it were the other way around I would want Iowa State to stand by it's in-state rival and fellow regent institution.

If KU goes PAC 16 and MU goes SEC, I'm a little concerned about possible Big East backup plan.
This NY Times Article says the Big East has been in contact with Multiple Big 12 teams, no no mention of specific teams. Hopefully that includes ISU...

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/05/s...-key-player-in-pac-12s-expansion-outlook.html

A high-ranking college official did say Sunday that the Big East had reached out to multiple Big 12 universities and indicated, much as it did during the Texas-Pac-12 expansion talks last year, that the league would be interested in taking the universities if the Big 12 fell apart. The official said the Big East was not rooting for the demise of the Big 12, but opened up lines of communication in case it dissolved.

That makes me hopeful. As ISU was one of those teams last year, id hope we'd be one again this year as well.

It's a hypothetical, but you can't really make a sensible response to it, because Iowa never has and likely would never be in that situation in comparison to us.

Who in the what now?
That was a comment from here earlier attributed to him. He cannot say until it plays out. That is probably why the closed call by Beebe with the other schools (no UT/OU)in the last few days. They have the current scenario on what are the options and what may come down so that they are prepared to explain to their schools.

I did not listen to the call in show where JP made that comment. The way he said it, does it make you feel good or bad?

What he said and the way he said it made me feel much better about our situation.

Chris Williams asked him what Iowa State's future would be. Jamie said that he knows the answer to the question, but cannot say at this time. Jamie went on to say that we should all take our hands "off the panic button". He said that most of the "talk" out there is just talk. Finally, he said that he is confident that Iowa State will end up in a VERY good conference.

If the Big XII blows up and we end up in the Big East, I kind of wish the basketball only schools pack their bags and do their own thing. It's just a bunch of more players to divide conference revenue between even if it is unequal.

I wonder if there's a podcast of this anywhere..

I don't understand all this "Why isn't Iowa riding in on a white horse to save us and get us in the Big Ten".

Yeah, it would be nice, but seriously what the hell is Iowa supposed to do. Threaten to leave if they don't take ISU? Yeah, that will work.

What power does Iowa have? They're safe because they're lucky enough to have been in the Big 10 forever. They are along for the ride. They don't have any power in this.

It's one thing for an OU or UT to make demands about other schools...they're dealing from a position of power--"take us both or take neither." Iowa is already there. Their only card is "take ISU or we'll walk," and I think we all know if it came down to that, they'd be walking.

I think your assertion is completely wrong that it could not happen to Iowa. They do not represent any major TV markets. Besides, if you had asked anybody 20 years ago about the events we are currently seeing, I doubt that there would be many that could have foreseen this.

Never say never.
