This occasional beleif by some Cyclone fans, fueled by this BCS-attitude that because ISU is a bigger, BCS school, we are automatically always better and more superior.

I think the key word there is "some". From my experience most ISU fans pull for UNI when they're not playing the Clones. UNI's rosters in football and basketball are often filled with a lot of homegrown talent, and I'll be pulling for them this year in the D IAA playoffs.

Although I was hoping Youngstown St. would pull off the upset, I still want UNI to win the whole thing. I just wanted a little humbling, kinda like the way I feel for the Hawks, I'm all for the players, but it's the fans I root against.

M & M were talking to the guy who runs Harrisons Sports and he was talking about all the Hawk fans coming into his store buying UNI gear. Enough said, you've just described both fan bases.

Speaking as a UNI only fan, I totally respect the fact that some people on here hate the fact that UNI has a portion of the fan base that is 'dual fans'. I hated it for a long time too, but I have come to realize that even though those fans don't agree with me, I can't hate them for it. Do I try to change it? Yes. Am I successful? Not always. However, what I have noticed is that most of those 'dual fans' (albeit not just Hawk but Clone/Panther or Nebraska/Panther fans), are that they typically are only that way in football. They see UNI as separate from Iowa/ISU in football...as they are in separate subdivisions (D1 FBS and FCS). However, in basketball and all other sports, it's UNI only, as they see ISU/Iowa on the same level.

Growing up, I had a favorite(s) 1-A football team(s) to follow, but that was b/c growing up, you didn't see the UNI's of the world on tv. For those who state that they have been UNI alums and have gone to UNI games in the past, the on campus atmosphere has changed over the past 5 years as compared to the previous 120 years since it's inception. The men's basketball program at UNI was not very good until then, and at that time (with the playoff resurgence under Farley), the campus became more and more UNI only. I have been amazed at the number of 'Panther only' fans that are graduating, on campus, or who have been dual fans their whole life, only to realize they have a product they can really get behind at UNI.

I'll be honest, as a Panther alum, I don't think I could afford to be a fan of any other college in the state. :) My sports nature wants to get 100% behind a team, and that means going to as many games as possible, traveling to some games, and buying NCAA tourney tix. At UNI, while close in proximity, is also the most affordable. I can get season tickets for football, basketball, wrestling, and volleyball for less than $500...and they are great seats against great competition. If I can't watch them live in person, I can usually watch my team on tv (football/basketball).

So, I guess the reason for this post is to let those know who haven't been to UNI lately (last 5 years), the dynamics have changed. If you think the Dome has a bad atmosphere, then you would be correct, if it's only 60% full. However, as UNI this year puts a crowd of 90-95% capacity every game in the Dome, it has been great. When it's 80% it's been great. Come to the Dome for a playoff game, things have changed. Will you still see the occasional Hawk hat? Sure...same goes for the Clone hats. Will you see more than a handful? Not anymore. The fan base is changing, and no, UNI couldn't have gotten to where they are today without loaning some fans from the other regent schools, but the way things are going now, dual fans will continue to become a much smaller portion of the fans cheering in the stands (however, at UNI they welcome as many fans as possible regardless of where they come from, if you can get a ticket). And at the same time, I'm not hating on those who are dual fans. I just hope that those who come from UNI will become more and more of a Panther fan, and less of their other school they cheer for. :)

People, please.

UNI has dominated us on the basketball floor, on the football field, and on the track recently. This discussion is mind-numbing.

Saying they are just in a "different division" of football does not justify it. They are still better than us.

To supplement pttb's post (which I agree with 100%), I was in Cedar Falls a couple of weekends ago for Homecoming weekend and I definitely noticed a lot more Panther gear that people were wearing than I did when I went to school there 10 years ago. There is definitely more school spirit. In regards to the dual fans, I won't pretend that there is not a fair share of those that cheer for UNI/Iowa, but think about it; unless you're from Cedar Falls/Waterloo or have a direct connection to UNI somehow, most kids in Iowa don't grow up as Panther fans. Both UI and ISU have bigger fan bases, much more state/regional/national media exposure and bigger enrollments. Also, since Cedar Falls is in the northeastern part of the state and is only a couple hours north of Iowa City, I think it's going to get a lot of dual fans that way. Personally, I don't understand the big deal that some Cyclone fans make about dual UNI/Iowa fans anyway. What does it matter to Iowa State? Heck, personally I take it one step further by being a "tri-fan"; grew up in Ames, went to UNI, and then got a Master's degree from Central Michigan University. I'm just waiting for the inevitable post from some Cyclone fanatic telling me that I can't be a real Cyclone fan since I didn't go to school there.

Purple Panther looks wimpy, purple unis look nice.

I thought their panther mascot was black with a purple football jersey on. I'd better pay more attention the next time they are in town kicking our ***.

PTTP hit it on the head as usual. Youre absolutely right when you talk about dual fans. As a current junior at UNI who has converted to 100% Panther fan (grew up an Iowa fan, and now hate the Hawks) I can say that the attitude here is different. There are definatley more 100% Panther fans and less dual fans then there were even when I first got here 2.5 years ago. This is probably due to the success of the basketball team, and the resurgance of football doesnt hurt either. Definately a lot more purple pride recently.

I'd also like to say that I grew up a quad-fan. Growing up I was an Iowa, Drake (I'm from Des Moines) UNI and ISU fan (in that order). Since becoming a UNI fan though, the Hawks smugness has rubbed me the wrong way and Ive grown to dislike them. I have been rooting for Iowa State this year and it was because of the fans. Unfortunately, some of the people on this thread sound like Hawk fans.

Most of my negative attitude towards UNI came from my experience at the Dome when ISU played there in basketball a couple years ago. The fans (mostly students) were pretty much on the floor with no security at all and yelling expletives in the ISU players faces throughout the whole game. Maybe you could say I should hate the Dome security but that experience pretty much ended any backing I would ever do for UNI in the future. That and the hundreds of Hawkeye shirts/hats I saw in the crowd that night...

See, you aren't the kind of fan I have a problem with at all. I applaud and appreciate you supporting your (hopefully) soon-to-be alma matter. And it has nothing to do with UNI as a program. It's just the bandwagon I-like-UNI-when-they-are-winning-but-will-ignore-them-when-they-are-bad-or-just-ok fans that annoy me.

I hate them in the same way I hate Cowboy fans, or Miami Hurricane fans, or Notre Dame fans, or Pittsburgh Steeler fans who just became fans because those teams were good when they were growing up.

I'll probably hate ISU fans that just come along when the program is good as well. I'm pretty fair in who I hate :biglaugh:

I am a Steeler fan because they were good when I was growing up! What is wrong with that? 30 years as a Steeler fan and you dismiss that as what...a bandwagon fan? Or are you talking about those who are Steeler fans since February 2006?

Yes, I do dismiss it as a bandwagon fan. You got on the bandwagon because the team was good. Length of time on bandwagon doesn't make it any more legitimate.

It's the same thing as UNI students who are Iowa fans now because Iowa was good growing up, but cheer for UNI just because they are good now too.

You are kidding me right? Then how does one become a legitimate fan? Only like a team that $ucks? Hope they get good?

Also...I had to sit and cheer for the Steelers through the Bubby Brister years...that alone makes me a legitimate fan!

Also...a bandwagon fan jumps off when things aren't going well...so you are only looking at half of the equation!

I am generally a fan of teams I have an affiliation with, either due to geography, or history (i.e. schools I went to, teams I grew up around, or live around).

I'm not saying you're wrong to be a fan of the Steelers, I just don't like fans who became fans just because the team happened to be good once upon a time.

That's just me, and my opinion though.
