IF (big IF) this were true, it would probably not be that bad for ISU. Having 6 teams free would get the big10 to grab ahold and break up into 2 8 team leagues, east vs west. That would be a fun league.

ISU, KSU, KU, Nebby, Mizzou, Minnesota, Wisc, Iowa.

Imagine ISU, KU, KSU, and Baylor were the only B12 members left after this whole realignment. That would mean that there wouldn't be the required 9 votes to change the buyout rules for leaving the B12. So those other 8 schools would have to pay $10 million each to leave the B12. $80 million total that would be split 4 ways. Those 4 schools could then pick and choose who to fill out the new B12 conference (Utah, BYU, Boise, TCU, Louisville, etc.).

Might be the best situation if this all happens. I'm still not convinced anything will happen though.

If the Pac 10 went 16, it could be easy to envision the Big 10 inviting 5 as well.

Anyone that is all giddy about all this expansion talk, like Jon Miller and nearly all Hawkeye faithful, just remember this....

Rule #1: Money eventually ruins everything.

Trust me... Hawkeye fans will be feeling different about all of this in a few years when they become completely irrelevant.

It's not as easy to win a Big 10 title when you have to play Texas, Nebraska, and Missouri just to win your division. And in the years you have Ohio State on your schedule, you will have to beat Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Ohio State.... and then if you're lucky enough to win your division... you'll likely face Ohio State again in the conference championship game.

Money WILL eventually ruin college football. It's only a matter of time. But expansion will make that day come VERY fast. Oh well... it was fun while it lasted. All good things must come to an end. So be it. Good riddance.

Not to mention all of the lawsuits that will be filed if this does go to 4 super conferences. If the small schools have a gripe now, just wait. There is no way that this will be allowed to happen by congress if only 64 schools have a chance for BCS or NC games that would occur in a super-conference scenario. There is too much federal money going into college athletics to have them sit back and not have a comment. Think of the tax revenue that is lost by the tax exempt donations to these athletic departments. If this pisses off the right people, congress could turn this into a mess real quick.

There is a LOT of smoke now folks. Too many people making comments about this. And not just reporters, but AD's and presidents and such.

I think these teams are gone. Then Nebraska and Mizzou will be gone to the Big 10. That is the most likely scenario right now.

JP and Geoffrey had better be on the phone pretty quick to find us a conference. If not, I guess we'll just join the MAC.

I just can't believe that the Kansas Jayhawk basketball team will now be a mid-major. I never EVER envisioned that would happen.

Screw college athletics. It sucks. This will destroy everything, but so be it. They will get their wish.

Its begun. I don't know, but might this play out alright for us? Notre Dame, the true apple of the Big Ten's eye, sees the writing on the wall. They buck up to the Big Ten and Nebby, Mizzou, Iowa State get taken along to feild out the Western division (along with MN, IA, WI, IL, NW/PU/UI) and Pitt/Rutgers/Syracuse is taken in the east? We can hope, right?

Maybe ISU, KU, and KSU join the Valley for basketball. With that conference's recent history it would not be considered a mid-major anymore. In that case I have no idea what they'd do for football.

Iowa State University......6,197,669.....4,296,701.....1,900,968.....30.7%
University of Iowa...........9,423,886.....4,443,481.....4,980,405.....52.8%

That's revenue, expenses, profit and profit margin for men's basketball teams, I assume for 09.

I have no doubt that the U of I makes the extra bank simply due to being in the Big 10, because it's not because its that more people are buying tickets to Hawk games.

I'm pretty sure the IRS changed that so that doesn't work anymore.

You seem to be of the opinion it was ever about anything but money. Naïve. If it never used to be about money, explain the CFA (?) of the '80s and their monopolization of televised football, why Notre Dame has always refused to join a conference, the bowl system as we know it, and why the traditional powers from 50 years ago for the most part are still the powers today - it's ALWAYS been about money.

How many times does someone need to say this.... ISU will NOT be in the Big 10... NEVER!

We do NOTHING for the Big 10... got it?

We better be asking Kansas and KSU what conference we all want to be in? Our best hope might be the MWC, and throw in Boise St and whoever else? Or just join Conference USA or something?

that would be a sweet division...could travel easily to any road game and still maintain our important historic rivalries.

Or we ( the remaining Big XII) members ask the MWC to join us and boom, you have a major conference. Or we handpick members of the Valley and MWC and anyone else that is a good fit and form a new conference. Preferably one with a few major tv markets and LOTS of research money.

If ISU, KU, KSU, Baylor, and BSU all joined the MWC, it would be hard to deny that conference AQ status.

How? None of those schools aside from BSU bring anything near "prestige" (BSU only being the last few years). Thats just wishful thinking by you.

The current MWC is inches away from being a BCS league. If you add 4 schools from a BCS conference, and another Top 5 team, how the hell WOULDN'T that league achieve AQ status? If it was ISU, KU, KSU, and Baylor joining the Sun Belt, you'd have a point.

Our fans are pretty damn stupid. Chill the **** out.

If you don't think not being in a major conference would be the death of ISU athletics, you're pretty damn stupid.
