For the first time since 2014, an Iowa State Cyclone had his name called during the NFL Draft on Friday when David Montgomery was taken by the Chicago Bears in the third round with the No. 73 overall pick.
Montgomery became the first Cyclone selected since Jeremiah George in 2014. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is the first Iowa State running back to be selected since Troy Davis in 1997.
In three seasons at Iowa State, Montgomery rushed for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns while earning first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2017 and 2018. Montgomery finished third in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game as a junior in 2018 with 101.3 yards per game.
He finished his career in the program’s top-10 for career rushing yards, career rushing touchdowns, career 100-yard games and all-purpose yards.
Former Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler is also expected to be selected this weekend.
