Personally I have always loved Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra. There is a level of emotion and connection in his delivery that being a singer/songwriter adds that is lacking when people are singing someone else's music.
In terms of range I remember being surprised that Mike Patton from Faith No More was credited with having the largest vocal in pop music. He was always fun, but I never felt he showed a ton of that range.
