I’m heading from good sources he really is not entertaining baseball draft. This means teams know that and won’t waste a early draft pick on him.
He has has expressly said he is playing baseball if the money is right.

his “people” have been limiting the pitches he can throw in a game and how often he can pitch for the hawks. There’s really only one reason to do that and it’s not to play WR in football.

The money is better in the MLB (unless you’re a quarterback) and the potential damage to your body is much more limited in the MLB. I love football and hate baseball, but I’d go MLB 10 times out of 10 if it were my choice.

It’s the brain damage that I’d be concerned about, but that said when I was 18 I went skydiving, rode homemade zip lines, and had boxing matches in my friends’ basement so I wasn’t exactly concerned about that stuff.

If he happened to be committed to Iowa State...I would still think he should take 1st round money if he gets the chance...and to be honest...even 2nd round money now! If he lasts into the 2nd round...someone will draft him contingent on a deal already in place! Somone will give him 1st round money and tank the rest of the draft! The White Sox took a high school pitcher in the 2nd round last year and gave the kid $3 million to sign. They agreed to the general parameters of the deal ahead of selecting him. So...if Brecht gets that opportunity...he would be crazy to pass it up! I do understand his desire to play football and possibly a chance to "star" for one of his state's schools...but if he can approach a $3 million payday without throwing a pitch...he needs to do it!

Edit: by saying "tank" the rest of the draft I mean due to the signing bonus allotments MLB teams are limited in what they can spend so a team can blow their allotment on their first two picks then draft guys that have no leverage to negotiate against the team (such as a college player who has used up his eligibility).
There are two ways to over slot a draft pick. As you mention, pay the top guys more and then "tank" the rest of the draft.

The more popular method is to reach on the top couple picks with prearranged agreements with the agent/player. This leaves a bigger pool of $ to spread over the top 5-10 rounds with hope to sign more guys.

The Orioles did that last year. They took a 20ish ranked player #2 overall and paid him less than the #2 slot, but more than a #20 draft pick.

More than any other sport the baseball draft has very few sure thing draft picks, so it becomes a numbers game of signing a high % of a teams HS draft picks.

Yep...that way works as well...as long as no other team picks the kid you like before you get a chance to. But you are correct...that method allows you to save money for later in the draft.

wow, he's legit-clocked a 100mph, but is only #77 ?@? I don't follow MLB draft, but seems like he's got some rare talent and under-rated.

Agree...what is there that slides him down to #77? Experience? Can't teach 100mph+...there are certainly organizations that would be thrilled to bring that talent aboard and teach him complimentary stuff!

Basically, he is rated so low bc he has less travel circuit exposure paired with paying the Midwest penalty. Midwest recruits are perpetually undervalued bc the majority of scouts are based on the coasts. Iowa is, to my recollection, the only state that plays HS baseball in the summer which pulls him off that circuit and then he is FB in the fall instead of fall ball. Fanning 17 against Ames is hardly the same as fanning 17 against hypothetical KC Elite.

That is so true. For example, look at someone like Lane Danielson. Ran a 4.5, could bench 400 lbs and was obviously good enough to make big plays at the D1 level but he was really recruited by anyone. How does a guy who runs a 4.5 fall through cracks like that?

Agreed 100 mph is intriguing.

My guess is Brecht is #77 because he hasn't pitched against elite competition.

Most highly ranked HS players have had scouts watch them in showcase events.

Just curious. One article said he was the #3 ranked player in the state for the draft. Anyone know who the top two are?
Would be interested to see that article, could be outdated. I believe he's the #1 prospect at the moment, but in terms of high school prospects in the state, Jackson Wentworth is an RHP from Waukee that has gotten some buzz recently, and Ian Moller is a C from Dubuque (doesn't play for his HS) who is committed to LSU that has been a big prospect for a while.

Here is the article. When I actually googled Perfect Game’s ranking (from a couple of weeks ago), Brecht was indeed the highest ranked player from Iowa that I found—at #62.

At one time Moller from DBQ was projected as a 1st round pick.

He has taken a non-traditional path by playing on high-level travel team vs. high school for at least the last 3 years. He has also played in a number of the elite showcase events.

He has had an up & down spring and scouts have been much more critical in his evaluation and dropped from first round to around 125-150.

Just goes to show how finicky it is evaluating baseball prospects.

Brecht is #77 on here but he is flying up the board as he wasn't even in their top 200 a couple months ago. If you read his profile it indicates that he passed on some of the events other top prospects take part in because he was focusing on track and football. He's getting more attention now and if he keeps having these huge games he could legitimately be a second round pick. Hard to pass up that guaranteed money even with Iowa known for having prolific offenses with LSU receiver type numbers.
