Why is Columbus Day a federal holiday?

Honorable guy by today's standards? No. I think the federal holiday is more about union negotiations than any kind of additional honor to be bestowed upon him.

Federal employees get maybe one more holiday than most companies. They don't get the Friday after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve, so that cancels out Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

My private company gets MLK off. I have worked both private and gov't and there is an extra holiday with the gov't, but only one. I also got less vacation with the gov't.

No you need to get a job with the US State Department working in an Embassy since they observe the US Federal Holidays PLUS the local holidays.

I would say you work for a company that is very unique in that regard.

Federal workers who happen to be at work on the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve (practically none of them) end up getting half the day off anyway when the memo comes out saying they can leave early.
