I can't remember which guys wore which. But, essentially, our best players wore a different color helmet than the rest of the players. I'm sure that made it difficult for opposing teams to track down our best players...

83-86 SPECIAL. they are the red helmets with the 'cyclone'.

You are right as I recall. I think the wording was "Big 8 quality players" wore the red helmets.

Frankly I don't really care for any of them all that much. I think the current helmet is better than any of the previous ones. It probably doesn't help that a lot of those helmets are also associated with some awful losing football.

Which of our past helemts is your favorite?

Of your choices, I like the 76-78 version. It would be better with the current I-State logo. My personal preference is the Solid Old Gold of the Stapleton (Dirty Thirty) era.

I like the Cyclones ****** on there a lot, actually. I've always thought the last helmet is wayyy to busy and putting it up against the others confirms that. I'm sure I'll always enjoy seeing it since it is the one I've always known to associate with the 'Clones though.

The red "special" helmet was from the Criner era...instead of putting stickers on the helmet like say, FSU or Ohio State...we decided to put an entirely different colored "honor helmet" on our best players...I vividly remember LB Jeff Braswell wearing one. I think Tracy Henderson may have had one as well. I cannot think of anyone else...that would be an interesting trivia question...who donned the special honor helmets under Criner?

The guys you listed were certainly deserving of being considered for All Big 8 honors which is what the helmet was meant to signify. Still a bad idea though.

No question about the talent level of the guys pictured. All of them were pretty good. Just takes the luster off of the "special" aspect of the lids when at least six of your defenders are wearing them.
