Flying to Miami, driving to key West, flying out of Key West. Where do we stay? We are not swimmers or divers and too old to party all night. Suggestions on where to stay? PM if you know somebody with a place. Jan 4th-9th

If you have the $$$, the Hilton garden inn is nice. You could also consider a place in Marathon Key, Islamorada, or Key Largo if you don’t mind seeing other places in the Keys. But every place will be a lot.

If you stay in south Miami Dade, hotels will be a lot less. But you would have to drive 30 minutes to the upper keys and 3 hours to Key West.

We stayed at a nice resort on Stock Island which is the island next to key west. We didn’t want to be in the middle of the craziness, it was about a 15 minute golf cart drive to the main drag in key west. Oceans edge was the name I think.

We will stay in Key West. Lounging on a beach for days isnt active enough for us. We want to look at tourist stuff. Often we enjoy the best of the worst. We never drive by Wall Drug without stopping. People watching is awesome. Its better than Walmart watching people on vacation. My wife is tired of it but I have said for years "the wonderful differences in people." Key West might be better than Vegas if I am reading the right stuff.

What is the craziness? That intrigues me. I have peaceful relaxing at home. Empty nesters here.

Not very many beaches on Key West anyways, not sand beaches anyways.

We have two kids and not interested in the night life/bar scene. If you want that just pick a spot on or near Duval St.

Fort Zachary Taylor was cool, and we went out and did scuba diving, jet skis, and parasailing, that was awesome.

Think artificial, commercialized hedonism (a la Las Vegas or Mardi Gras). Some people love it. Not my scene. If nature and relaxing is more to your liking, that I know about.

We stayed at the Westin, which is right by Sunset Pier and near where the cruise ships dock. Walked everywhere we went the whole time, and thought it was very nice all around.

Not exactly sure.
Tips to save money. We walked by the small grocery store in the middle, saw a dude run out with a 12 pack of beer. A guy ran after him, took the 12 pack and walked back inside. You and the wife each grab and run, he can’t catch both so one will have theirs taken away and told not to come back and the other will have a free 12 pack.

If you are looking for the max craziness of Key West, delay your trip until April.

If you are looking for crazy people watching in Florida in January, I would recommend the Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa on Jan 27th.

I stayed at the Parrot key hotel and villas. Not too expensive, three beautiful pools and gardens to explore. Right on the water but no beach access. I highly recommend.

Much cheaper to stay at one of the other keys. Just take a day trip to key west. It’s way over rated.
We spent 5 days in Key West and never ran out of things to do (though admittedly we spent a lot of time just eating and walking around). Food is expensive though. Hard to get out of a restaurant for under $100 for 2, and that was 15 years ago.

Not sure if you need to stay in key west but if not, we love Marathon. A middle Key. Great beach lots of amenities, good fishing, decent restaurants. We go every year and do a day trip to Key West. Too much of a party atmosphere for us to stay longer than a couple days.
