Where to rent an aerator?

It doesn't need to be done before the first frost, but you don't want the ground to be frozen either or it won't pull decent plugs. I usually aerate and overseed in September. That gives the grass seed time to germinate and get established before the winter.
Also like said above, try to get a neighbor to go in with you. Last year I think it would have been cheaper for me to hire someone to do it.
Now there are also those that say aerating is a waste of time and money.
There is also a place called Ankeny Rental by DMACC and they rent that type of equipment. I don't know the cost.
Wait till September to do it. Definitely wouldn't do it now as dry as the ground is. It would be like pulling plugs out of your driveway.
That is what we did last year, it was about $70 for 4 hrs. We were able to get 5 lawns done in that time.
You should do it before the frost, You can try tool rental compact power there rates seem reasonable... if you can tell what neighbourhood your in maybe I can rent you as well?
I often use power rental provider if I need special tools I do not want to buy because I only need it once. I am not sure if you can rent an aerator there but just check their website in order to be sure if they have such tools. Nevertheless they have a lot of different power tools.
Home Depot, Ace Hardware...I rent from Porter's Hardware in Des Moines. Go in with a neighbor or two, and split the cost. They usually rent for around $75 per 3hrs. I've got two neighbors that like to aerate in the spring and fall with me. Three yards in 3 hours is pretty easy, depending on the yard size.
