Those weren’t even close to “biggest game in ISU history”.
Just to clarify the blatantly obvious (since someone disagreed)just because you thought it was going to be “important” going in to it, doesn’t mean it turned out that way. A seed that never germinated.

Winning Saturday wouldn’t change that. Making the title game would.

Yeah the 'beat Iowa' thing is 1980's style.

Biggest games come down to how the season has gone and ISU getting into the title game means the've really worked their way into the situation.

This is the 2nd game of the year and ISU is still figuring out its position situations.

GameDay is a nice little reward for the program and fan base but it does nothing to change perceptions of ISU football. The 2002 team that went into OU ranked #9 was completely out of the poll two days later. We've had big games and for the most part haven't done well in those situations. Even with Gameday here, our game is on FS1, not ABC.

It definitely isn't a popular opinion, but ISU hasn't arrived, at least not yet. We need to win consistently for a while to earn football respect.

But don't worry, we're closer than ever, and we are going to get there.

Bigger game than this Saturday would have been 2011 vs texas week 4, but still not the biggest. Iowa state was on the cusp of relevance starting out 3-0 and a few spots out from being nationally ranked with Texas coming to town. More fans at this game than the cy hawk two weeks prior. Early in the game Texas went for the fist down on 4th and 1 right around the redzone and getting stuffed. I forget who said it but someone said that was the loudest they had ever heard jack trice after that play. Pretty much all downhill from there though.

I won't dispute your main point of "arrival/non-arrival," only clarifying a detail historically. ISU didn't drop out of top 25 immediately after the '02 loss to OU. Although Cyclones obviously dropped in the poll, still remained ranked for three more weeks (and unsurprisingly dropped out after the disastrous game at KSU).

I stand corrected. Don't know why I remembered it otherwise...

Most Meaningful Win: 2017 @ #3 OU
2nd place: 2011 vs. OSU - That got the media's attention about contenders in Ames

Understandable, it certainly *seemed* like ISU immediately dropped like a stone after OU. Even managing to beat UT the following week would've stabilized the ship, but who knows, even that might have been only postponing the nosedive. (Or maybe it would have had the opposite effect).

The Gameday exposure is great for both programs. It'll gain some steam in recruiting as well. As far as it being the biggest game ever? I don't know about that. I think Texas last year was huge for you guys. Being the last time you made to the title game and actually won it gas was 0.18 per gallon (saw it on twitter don't kill me).

The Oklahoma State game in 2011 was a defining moment but I think the Oklahoma game a few years ago really got the program going.

May also add that this is a non-conference matchup wich means if we lose we still have chances at Conference Championship and New Year's Six bowl game.

Big games aren’t just those that we win, failed opportunities to succeed on a national stage are program definers as well. 02 OU was a chance to show how far we had come, that we were deserving of a top ten ranking and would compete for a big 12 championship. Instead we got dismantled and lost all but one of the remaining games. That was a big game and a big opportunity.

Some good picks and some solid thought but man I still think I disagree with most of you. I think the ramifications go far beyond a "w". CMC is changing the culture internally but unless and until these games are won, ISU is nothing but a nice little 8 win after thought that will get a 1 minute plug as they transition over to the big boys.

Maybe a loss propels us to unseen heights but I think we've had our scare with UNI and Drake. A win is a national culture changer IF we can finally capitalize on our success.

Every game listed as bigger than this game were losses (for the most part) so we need to start winning in the dark, in the light, in the margins, on the field during AmesDay with a national audience against our hated rivals against the ******* hawks. Win in the bathroom, the bedroom, in the kitchen, in the mother ******* kids play room.

I don't get caught up in the smack talk but its beyond ******* time to destroy these pussies by ******* the living **** out of these **** holes, cutting off their tits and cocks and ram feeding them down their **** stained **** gargling throats.
All of this is intangible fan perspective fluff. In terms of tangible goals this game is not that important unless you're talking about ISU making the CFP, and then every game is important. ****, just playing UNI to overtime is probably a huge ding on that resume.

That said the game is huge for fans of both teams in terms of **** talking rights. This will be the biggest spectacle and most hyped for sure, so that puts it at the top of the heap in terms of the CyHawk matchup.

Started out very ISU-esque with a couple of fumbles but were only down 13-0 which was at least possible to overcome. Then Leonard Johnson head butted a UT receiver after making the play that would have forced Texas to punt. He got taken out rightfully so, and UT went after the replacement DB for a long TD and that was pretty much it. LJ was good but man that was stupid.

I've never understood the DB/WR world where making a routine play needs a stage.

Dan never had any depth. Late season has always been our decline.

Your 2002 comment is not only irrelevant, but false. That 2002 team was still ranked after OU.

We were ranked in the preseason ahead of numerous programs that have won consistently. GameDay is in Ames despite a mediocre performance in Week 1.

What does arrive even mean? We’re in the Big 12. If we win get the same adulation and benefits as anyone else. Despite losing historically good players, preseason expectations are high.

We’ve got a lot of peers if one’s requisite destination for arrival is a conference championship.

Yes, the first part has already been covered above.

Secondly, there seems to be plenty of people here saying that GameDay hosting from Ames is an achievement for the program.

I don't think it really is at all. Success for ISU football is entirely determined on the field of play, not who is broadcasting outside of it.

GameDay is a nice thing for ISU fans, who really are the best in the business. It should be a fun environment. Beyond that...?

I did not think this would be controversial.
