I enjoyed most of the top 10.

Biebs and The Chainsmokers had some great songs in 2016.

Laughable premise.

Pop music is terrible these days (for the most part), but there is so much great music out there if you look for it.

If you like 90's alternative rock, for example, check this out. I think this is one of the best songs of the past decade, but absolutely has the sound of that era. It came out this year, and will never get played on terrestrial radio.

I read the thread before actually looking at the list. Before I looked at the list I was all for agreeing that it was a bad year. Then actually going through the list I thought it was actually pretty good. Some of this is probably due to my low expectations but there were still about 15 or so that I thought were really good.

My answer is "C" I don't know. I do my best to avoid the Pop music stations.

The new stuff on the alternative stations have been pretty decent this year, but those songs don't usually make the Hot 100 lists.

I just double checked the list. The Twenty One Pilot's songs are the only ones I can stand and there are only a handful of other songs that I even recognize.

And of course they are overplaying Twenty One Pilot's so much that I find myself changing the station when the come on now too.

Pop music sucks right now. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a 14 year old girl...

or BDK, which is pretty much the same thing.

Go back and look at the 70s top 100s. They are filled with **** like Barbara Streisand, Captain & Tenille, Olivia Newton John, and Ringo F'ing Starr.

This year is pretty well devoid of non-crap though.

Let's look at 1975, with Captain and Tennille topping the charts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_1975

You've got Elton John, David Bowie, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Average White Band, Stevie Wonder, America, Bad Company, Styx, Grand Funk Railroad, Bachman Turner Overdrice and mother ******' QUEEN!

So you'll have your soulless pop crap every year, but at least some years you have some quality in the Billboard Top 100.

This was the age of Disco and you've still got some quality in there.

I'm really impressed by this young man. I really like their song Fill in the Blank.

I don't think that 2016 was the worst year in music for the premise of the thread. As others have said, there was a lot of really great stuff that came out that didn't hit Ryan Seacrest's radar.

However - it's arguable that this was the worst year in terms of losses to the current music world. Prince, Bowie, Cohen, Haggard, Frey (that one is arguable), Lemmy just missed the cutoff for 2016 by a few days.

Yes it all depends how you define the "Music Year". But going off of the Billboard Hot 100 alone, 2016 was pretty terrible.

When you compare it to the Billboard Top 100 from previous years, it's pretty bad.

Of course this is just a critique of pop music for this calendar year, but it is telling that there's almost no palatable pop music this year when even some of the worst years prior had at least a handful of decent entries into the top 100.

There have been some great albums released this year, but you aren't going to find it on the radio or billboard.
Just a few off the top of my head:
Bon Iver
Radiohead
A Tribe Called Quest
Car Seat Headrest
Lumineers
David Bowie

...and more I'm forgetting.

I bet my grandpa and grandma thought music in the 70s sucked too. You old timers need to look at these things with a wider viewpoint than your own limited one. You can appreciate and understand someone's musical ability without actually liking their stuff.
