Harrington wins it 8-6. ISU leads 16-11 with only the heavies left.

Walz is ranked #3 and beat Smith by 14 points last time they wrestled. Smith has to avoid the pin or tech fall for ISU to win the meet.

Phase 1 of operation "Don't get pinned" is a success. Scanlon down 2-4 after the first period. Walz starts on botton in the 2nd.

He keeps it up in Phase 2. Gives up an escape and a stalling point. Scanlon is down 2-6 going in to the third.

Phase 3 is complete and Scanlon stayed off his back. Goes down 10-3 but ISU wins the dual 16-14 to take 1st place at Virginia Duals.

And I'm sure VT will get exactly as much sympathy on this board for being shorthanded that Iowa State got when the Cyclones were shorthanded for that season opening loss.

Not exactly sure.
Short handed or not, several guys improved there matches from the first time. That is very positive. Keep moving forward.

Thing is...the way things are looking now, I don't know how shorthanded we really were in the opener.

Look, I'm very happy with this win, but let's keep it in perspective. 165 and 184 did better against starters than they did before. 125, 133, 141, & 149 did worse or similar (Gabe lost by a similar score as Briceno, which is not good). 157, 174 & 197 were big swings for us because we were wrestling their backups.

Story Co.
Had to work today and then went straight to a family Christmas so I didn't get to keep up with this much. Thanks for updating as usual Judoka and of course, Go State!
