Here Here! I want to know more about these supposed secure areas in the basement of Gilliam. Can't someone go down there and snap some pictures?

And here i thought you'd already been down there, i figured your posts were just a side effect of the radiation :biglaugh:

Hello everyone, I am alive and well. I ended up talking to the "old shriner" yesterday, or Randy. I went there about 4:30pm, and stopped outsite his place. He was out in the yard digging or something weird, and I asked him if this was the Johnson residence. He said no, and then I said, "Well shoot, these were the directions that I was given and now I'm lost." I told him that I was a bill collector and I normally operating in Des Moines. I asked him if he could give me directions back to Ames. I'm not going to lie, he was a little standoffish at first, but he told me his name was Randy, and gave me the directions.

After he gave me directions, I said to him, "Wow, that is sort of a strange place for a park. What is that building back there?" That's when it got weird. His reply was, "That is my soul and my rage." To which I said, "It sure looks pretty interesting. You must get a lot of kids and families out here when the weather is nice to play at the park." And he said, "Only the dead play here and their dance is one of the quiet song." At this point, he turned around, and just started walking back to his "house". I shouted out, "Thanks for your help Randy!" and turned to get in my car, but as I was about to get in, he shouted out, "My name is not Randy!".

All in all, it was weird. Is this guy crazy? In my professional opinion, yes. Is he dangerous? I'm not sure. If something would've happen and he had to throw down, I'm fairly certain I could've mopped the floor of his creepy park with him. Will I go back there again, definitely.

Well I guess I owe someone some credits. Wait- how do we know you actually talked to him?

BTW, I believe his name is Daniel.

The basement of Beyer hall is interesting. There is a window where you can look in to the pool and allot of cool chambers.

I'm honestly curious to see a map of the tunnels under campus. Obviously there was a map way back on one of the pages but someone said it wasn't accurate and I'm curious to know.

I will say it's cool going onto the Iowa State Facilities Planning and Maintenance site and looking at some of the building plans.

Also, the PDF I downloaded about Iowa State's involvement in the Manhattan Project is an interesting read.

I remember the first time i walked into the hallway with the entrances to the raquetball courts. The hallway is small and narrow, and with the small court doors- i totally felt like I was in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory....

and I got through a good portion of this last evening - he's not lying. If you like that kind of history, it really is a good read. Not terribly boring or anything. It tells about how a genius like Spedding (and thus the Manhattan Project) coming to ISU was really just a curious happenstance. Spedding, in charge of the Chemistry division of the project, spent the beginning of each week working in Ames, and would then spend the end of the week in Chicago, running both chemistry operations. Had a sleeper car room reserved for his trips there and back every week.

Just for the record, I'm talking about the basement and not the ground floor. The level below the racquetball courts.

That was me. Your not going to find the official map anywhere online, all you will find is guesses. You will have to work for facilities or some related job with the university to see those actual maps. Surprisingly, some of the basement plans actually show tunnel entrances, but most of those entrances are alarmed.

That would be both because of liability and security... They used to be used for theft as well as exploration so... I know they dont like to disclose that type of stuff

I have no clue if its true or not (probably not) but when I lived in Friley my freshman year, it was widely told to me that Friley had the highest suicide rate of any college dorm in the country.

I don't think that is still true. There are not that many suicides on campus and most of them are in MWL and UV. I know that Friley is one of the largest dorms in the US and the only dorm with it's own zip code.

I remember National Geographic did an article on Friley once for the section of the magazine where they focus on a unique zip code. A writer and photographer spent a whole week in Friley for their article. The first day they were there they took pictures of and interviewed my friend and I, who had just parked our motorcycles at the Friley lot and were on our way to work at the maintenance office. That was September 10, 2001. Needless to say we did not get any mention in the article.

No clue if that is true or not, but in my time on campus the only suicide that I ever heard of in a dorm occured in Friley.
