My 2 cents:

1) Schwab and Dresser have elevated their programs since they took over so credit to both. No doubt Dresser shows more class.

2) Schwab doing more with less & filling up the McLeod is good for wrestling.

3) Who will be the face of UNI when Keck leaves???

4) Refs weren't horrible today. I sat mat side and detected no glaring issues.

5) Disappointed in Riggins & Gaitan.

6) PJ deserved to lose, but kinda got screwed when Realbuto didn't have to take an injury timeout, which woulda put PJ in the down position on the restart.

7) Osmany looked disinterested.

8) I luv Chittum as he had the balls to go all the way to the tunnel to greet Downey for introductions. He looked like he expected to win.

9) Credit to EB for moving up against a quality 197'er.

10) I realize Jacob had a slight setback, but the Frost Bros are my MVP's right now.
Agree with #6, not sure how Realbuto can take that break and it wasn't blood

My thoughts in Paniro. I have never seen anyone gas that hard. He backed up the entire match. He is so inconsistent with his effort it drives me nuts. The kid is so talented but unfortunately I don’t see how this version can be consistent in March.

That being said I know he has a medical issue. I was extremely worried about him when he wasn’t getting up. But that doesn’t sound like that was the cause of the problem yesterday. The crazy thing is it wasn’t like he did much during the match to gas himself like that.
And he got the only 2 takedowns in regulation. I haven't rewatched the match, but how many takedown attempts did Realbuto take during the regulation match? maybe 1 or 2.

When Colton Schultz pushed Herrera around that mat in the ASU dual, we were complaining that Schultz had no shots. Very similiar to the Realbuto match, but at a lighter weight where it is not ok. Now I do agree that Paniro was gassed. The 2 at the end looked like a great scramble to me.

Rewatching 125 Osmany got choked out? You can see Ech in the top of the screen yelling at the staff about it. Someone I think said this earlier but I needed to rewatch it.

Idk if you saw after the dual but Metcalf and Schwab walked up and shook hands. And Dresser and Schwab get a long. In the heat of the moment you defend your guys no matter what. I’m a huge Schwab guy and he was over the top but he was going to fight for his guys. There’s a lot of mutual respect between staffs but in the heat of the dual that how it can get sometimes. If that was carver the brands losers wouldn’t show that respect.

The kids also respect each other too. It’s kind of nice to see a highly competitive dual and class afterwards.

If Paniro wasn’t backing up the whole time I’d defend but honestly I can’t. Yes he got the takedowns but the backing up cost him

This dual is very hard for me. I’m a graduate of both schools and I am pretty close to the UNI guys since my sons have wrestled out of the club they now practice at. I have gotten to know the UNI kids very well, and they are better kids than wrestlers. I love their hard nosed attitude and the culture I see.

I love Cyclones as well, I’m a huge fan of our program. Both programs are what’s right in the sport.

Hell, our relationship with Iowa doesn't seem as red hot as it has been in the past. I know the staffs aligned on a few goings on in the wrestling world over the past several years resulting in things being a little unfrosted. Almost sad to see. ;-)

A few thoughts:

I know we had issues with the broadcast yesterday.

SDSU on Friday was about as good as it gets with a new arena with plenty of bandwidth and room on press row without fans being on top of you. I was by myself and don't think I've ever talked that much in my life. I wished that Nate would have been there because he's the best and we would have put on a great show that night with how that dual played out. Joe was taking a much-needed break, and if the 3 of us had been in Brookings, it would have been ridiculous when Herrera got that ride-out. I am so appreciative of Joe and Nate letting me be a 3rd wheel on these broadcasts. Andy Stubblefield was awesome stepping in and giving me a chance to breathe on Friday. Andy is the Oracle of ISU wrestling for a reason.

UNI was tough.

A record crowd, lots of media wanting to fight for their spot and fans literally 2' from us constantly screaming and causing problems with our equipment. Our engineers are in Joplin, Missouri and there's only so much they could do about the situation yesterday.

I know it wasn't a good broadcast, but it got to the point where Nate and I had to decide to either just log off, or keep talking and pray for a miracle from the technology gods.

As far as my broadcasting skills, you'll never confuse me for an ESPN announcer, but I'm "Clone to the Bone" when it comes to ISU wrestling and I'm going to be a homer on the call. I care too much about these kids to be objective. Coach Dresser has some really neat people stepping out on the mat. I just act like I'm sitting next to someone at their first wrestling meet and try talking to them about what is going on out there. But I'm not a professional and never claim to be.

Nate and I have a unique opportunity to be in the room for the referee's instructions to the team and Coach Dresser's pre-match talk to the team. It gives us some perspective on what to look for and things to talk about. It was very frustrating when the point of emphasis that was made in the locker room was control of the mat area with coaches running all over and that flew out the window right from the beginning.

On Friday, when Herrera stacks his guy for more than a 2-count and Titus is looking at who knows what, I'm going to call him out. Yesterday, when Schwab was allowed to do the complete opposite of what was just said to the team in the locker room, I'm going to call that referee out too.

To the people asking for a coaching change, c'mon get real. It was a perfect storm yesterday for UNI. Coach Dresser made the moves he had to make to give us a shot to steal one. It didn't happen, but I like our guys and I like our guys in Tulsa.

Brighter days are ahead, keep the faith.

Ryan
Thanks for this write up! And your good work! I don’t think anyone blames you ir Nate for the audio quality.

Yep MJ wanted the release and Simma was trying to use up clock. The injury and that locked hands call changed that match. MJ will get him next time.

The dive backs after a release is something our guys are going to need to be ready for. Brilliant strategy by UNI.
I don’t know why refs are so hesitant to call an escape in this situation. When their facing each other and the guy cutting is on the feet, that is an escape. Make the bottom guy wrestle, this seems like a no brainer.

So obviously he wasn’t backing up the whole time if he scored 2 takedowns. Creating space to get a shot off isn’t backing up. The second stall call was the worst as Paniro just made two legit shots in a :10 second span but then gets pushed 5 feet and is immediately called. Agree with everyone that he got gassed for whatever reason and lacks the mental toughness sometimes but I doubt he loses that match with any other ref.

Ref was real quick on stall calls.
Not sure how if person pushing you out that some moves you can circle in or you give up a takedown.
The last call bs. He turned to circle to free his ankle not much else you can do.
Have to look at Ossomniy match too.
Think he will be good once he gets more folk style wrestling in.
Hope the get the radio broadcast fixed it was basically worthless as hard poor reception and cut out for both matches at key times. Wounder if the could test it on varsity app to see if it working.
Are big 12 on tv?
Can not find anything listed on big12 or our site.
Lat year was espn+ and espn.

This right here. A guy intentionally lets a guy go, they're facing one another and the "bottom guy" dives back in and grabs a leg. No idea how that's not 1, and if it's not, then it needs to be stalling.

After watching the match again that stall calls were poor.
Watch the ISU vs Ok ST and all Ok did was back up and very little calls.
Very inconsistent from refs.
Ossominy was definitely out.
Looking at some photos ref should have got him off the throat and should have been a penalty point for State.
Definitely ref affected by the crowd.
Makes a big difference have a smaller arena get a lot more crowd noise.
Great crowd by UNI very good team but injury definitely made big difference without Anthony, Yonger and Tysen also if Carroll stayed would been nice to see him against Volker there split in Vegas.

It was textbook. He’s lucky he didn’t get DQ’d. Had to have been sick or something. I was having Schwab/Hinson PTSD.
Holy crap, that was against Schwab?!?! I clearly remember Hinson getting DQ'd for stalling in that match, but had no recollection of it being Schwab.
