Disappointing but not the end of the world. Degen is the one that really bothered me. So easy to get to his legs and good wrestlers finish those shots. He tries scoring from those positions but can’t against top 10 guys. Took one shot and scored quickly on it.

Coleman didn’t look good either. Lujan really has his number.

Have to give a lot of credit to Colbray though. He looked awesome.

125 -- Only issue is he needed to go to a different attack late. Needed to go with a different set-up or different angle or just different leg attack all together.
133 -- Did what he was supposed to do.
141 -- Great match. Those two both battle. Saw the shot from the outside coming. Parker will need to beat someone at Alber's level to All-American in a month.
149 -- Certain match-ups will be tough for him. The more people wrestle him, the more they can adjust and gameplan. A good draw at NCAA's is a few guys he hasn't wrestled before.
157 -- Solid win. See what he can do Sunday. Mizzou's guy is solid but did gas out a bit against Oklahoma State.
165 -- Guys are doing their best. Just out-matched against ranked guys at this point.
174 -- Needs to stop going to his back. Big dual, you can't get pinned. I know Lujan is tough. I know he is unorthodox. But don't get pinned.
184 -- Huge win. His improvement this year continues. Foster is a very tough guy.
197 -- I appreciate Miklus. Does he light up the scoreboard? Usually not. But he battles and gets after it.
285 -- After a ride-out for entire second period, can't get ridden out yourself. Just can't let it happen. Thought he was out a couple times and seemed to get complacent once he was up to his feet.

Not a great dual, but not terrible. Knew the match-ups made winning this dual very tough. UNI took early toss-ups plus got the fall at 174. Things to work on. Big dual on Sunday.

Degen is the one wrestler that has frustrated me the most this year. He has to find ways to be more aggressive. This is not a knock on him as he wrestles his style.

Co-worker made a good point this morning , he said sometimes it’s easier to compete when expectations are low compared to when they are high. We certainly showed this with our performance at Iowa. Being consistently successful is a learned behavior and we are on the way there.

I thought it probably looked like a fun dual to be at.

I think Mizz is going to be the same type of potential. We need to win some tossup to have a chance to win. If tossups go the Mizz way, expect a similar outcome.

And remember, this is Year 2 in the rebuild. A year ago, any of us would be extremely excited with the results we've seen this year!!!

Not exactly sure.
First glance, I was disappointed with the results. Then I thought about the last couple years. Logan right now is a true freshman and was not a huge name recruit (hey, no knock on him, he's a good wrestler and I'm happy he is competing for ISU but he wasn't a David Carr level name). A year or two ago, his current level was a good portion of our lineup. He will improve and compete for a spot in future years, but two years ago we would have been thinking he was our 2-4th best wrestler probably.

I look at it now and realize UNI is a bad matchup for us and also a solid team. We lose one guy off this team next year and have a couple blue chippers coming in.

Well we have made progress, but have a ways to go. It was a fun event to attend. West gym is a great place to watch a wrestling meet. Being there reminded me of the atmosphere in Hoosiers.

Gal behind us told us before Schwab came she went to meets where they had literally 6 people in attendance...

This year and next are UNI's years.
Alber, Thomsen, Steiert, Foster, and Lujan and was suppose to have Holschlag.

That is 6 pretty strong AA candidates if they all stayed healthy.

What has their recruiting been like the last couple of years. Almost seems like Dresser has really bit into them.

Reality is
125 - Schwarm on top was the concern and he got a lot of RT
133 - Needed bonus and Austin delivered
141 - knew it was going to be close and Alber a slight favorite
149 - Degen hasn't beat Thomsen yet. He has Degen figured out on their feet.
157 - Straw was a favorite and did. Coming on strong late in the season. Same as last year, but is it enough to get to Nationals
165 - Steiert is tough.
174 - Thought Coleman could keep it closer, but been struggling a bit lately. His motor doesn't seem to be there recently.
184 - Colbray is coming on strong, but didn't think he would get the win. Glad I was wrong
197 - Gordon wrestled conservatively and Miklus couldn't push enough to get bonus
Hwt - Always a battle. Thought Gremmel had it after the ride out

I agree with this.

I am really only disappointed with Mackall, Gremmel and Coleman.

Schwarm is up and down. Not looking like any points at NCAA's at 125

I know Gremmel split matches with Isley but Isley just came back from injury. Gremmel had some decent wins and was expecting him to turn the corner.

I was honestly expecting a major from Lujan but not a pin. Cant give up 6 and expect to win many duals.

Awesome job by Colbray!! Gomez, Straw, Miklus took care of business.

The UNI duals look to be entertaining for the next few years!

There big time recruits haven't panned out.

Foster, Schwarm, Holschlag, Steiert were no where to seen on the national rankings, if I remember right

Alber, Lujan and Rudy Yates were.

I think the Kickeisen is an incoming freshman that is pretty good. Other than that, it is Iowa boys, Lara, McConkey, Bennett, Blockhus, Briscoglia

Blockbuster looks like he’s going to be able to step in and compete right away as a top 20 type of guy. Not sure about the others.

I'm not a wrestling guy but I do know Schwab has two kids from Georgia coming that were 4 time state champs. I have no idea how that translates but Lujan was a 3 time Georgia champ and he's been really good.

I come out the meet optimistic just based on the performance we saw out of Colbray. That gives Iowa State a chance at having 4 AA's this year which I would have said was impossible to start the year. Like everyone stated above, we do not match up well with them and could have won a couple of tossups. This team is so far ahead of where I thought they would be after last year. Only continue to gain more confidence in the staff and where the program is headed.
Side note, I really enjoyed Schwab's interview after the match on Flo. Wish ISU would do the same with Dresser.

Pretty sure Steiert was around the 12-15 range at his weight, based on the fact that he beat Dayton Racer in the state finals and Racer was ranked around there as well. Thomsen was also a very highly ranked recruit.

Doesn't take away from your main point, though.

Would love for Dresser to create a culture where we develop Midwest kids like Schwab does, but with more blue-chip level recruits thrown in, due to us being Iowa State and not UNI.

Foster never even won state. Pretty impressive progression.
