UAB

Can a UAB fan on here please tell us why the system wants to shut down your whole campus? I know they shut down football but I read some posts suggesting they hate the entire campus? If that's true please start a thread with the info so it doesn't get lost in here. No jokes - I'm serious! Thanks.

The Blazers are a difficult matchup. They are 1st in the Northwest Division. Even though Wesley Matthews will be out (just had successful surgery on his torn Achilles) they'll lose his 15PPG, but LaMarcus Aldridge (23PPG avg) has been playing great at the PF position and will look to post Niang up. Monte Morris will have his hands full guarding Damian Lillard and Robin Lopez has been a great rim protector with 1.6 blocks per game. We can't leave Arron Afflalo open from 3 in the corner and Nicolas Batum has been a great energy guy off the bench. Gonna be a tough game for Iowa State against the Blazers for sure.

Types of teams that Iowa State wants to avoid (but can still beat):

Teams that shoot lights out from 3
Teams that outrebound everyone
Teams that score a lot/have great spacing
Teams that are great FT shooters

I don't see UAB or SMU fitting the bill. As long as ISU doesn't sleep walk through the game and show they want it more they will win. Anything can happen in March Madness. ISU just has to make sure they aren't in positions late where "anything could happen."

I love ISU's resiliency and heart being down double digits all these times. People can no longer say ISU "lives and dies by the 3." ISU shot like complete crap from behind the arc against KU and still won the Big 12 Tourney. But they can't keep getting down and trying to comeback, it could very well catch up with them eventually. They need to build a 3-4+ possession lead and build upon it/hold the opponent at arms length (preferably McKay's arms length.) All these teams that make the tourney are going to be very good teams, there are no Mississippi Valley States left to play.

I like everything you've said.

My biggest concern with all of the come backs is that it's going to wear the team out.
We need a good solid win to build confidence and not wear the boys out. Naz in particular was short on almost all of his threes. Though I loved his energy slashing to the rim.

It appears that UAB cares more about their team than at least half the big 12 so that's cool.

Brent Blum wowing the pants off them boys down there with his quick analysis of the Blazers:

Wow he knows more about us than most in state writers. Nice work

He's a damn sight better than the moron we have as a beat writer. He covers us and he couldn't write us up that well.

Darn, that was exactly what I was going to post. I wonder where he got his info so quickly.

ISU wins by 15+ IMO. UAB won't present much of a problem. Any problems will be created by our team for the most part. Our Cyclones must not beat themselves.

Damnation, another year where we end up with a team that I honest-to-god like, and want to see succeed. What that university and community have gone through has been heartbreaking, and I was honestly glad to see them get some basketball success to make the stings hurt a bit less.

But here we are. Thursday, we'll have to play them. We've got a great shot at beating them. And then all they have to look forward to is the giant hole that used to be football season.

One of these years, can we get matched up against a bunch of white supremacists with strong and vocal stances against puppies and puppy-related things? Someone I can actually hate?

We can relate.

We already play KU 2-3 times a year. What more do you want?

We just beat Oklahoma on Friday

If we both make it to the Sweet 16... there will be plenty plenty mucho to hate on that team. Save some up, just in case.

Watched some of the UAB vs UNC game and UAB kinda hung around for a half within 12-15 pts mostly. They were kinda she'll shocked though playing on big stage and I think with this young if a team it could happen in tourney too. Blum was pretty much right on with his assessment although I didn't really see their bigs to be all that imposing inside but that was against UNC who has some good bigs so...wts, UnC wasn't exactly playing great bball at that time either. The UAB guards look like they aren't the ultra quick get to the rim type which benefits us highly no doubt. They have a couple kids who can hit threes just ok if left open but they aren't a 3pt shooting team, again a positive sign for us.

one thing I did notice is they go back and forth between man and zone. I can see them starting the game in a zone and making us prove we can win by shooting the 3. Overall I think both Mckay and Niang have a monster game and they don't reallt have anyone that would match up well with BDJ or ANader off their bench.

if ISU comes out with the same intensity we left KC with we should win this game by 12-16 pts.

Read a bit about their football scandal from a few years back and you might not feel as sorry for them.

Ken Pom has them at 130th for adjusted offense, and 130th for adjusted defense (we are 7th and 82nd) and 159th for adjusted tempo (we are 15th). From what I have seen, they struggle a bit shooting and on offense in general, and get a lot of their points off turnovers. Seems like a good match up for us.
