UAB

Blazer fan here, and yeah, we're just trolling you guys. Most of the fans (the realistic ones anyway) are just happy to be in the tourney, since no one expected us to be here, given the overall youth on this team. More than anything, we just want the guys to learn about the NCAA experience this year, to hopefully set up success there for the next couple years.

Those of us that follow college basketball know that Iowa St. is for real and it'll take our "A+" game and then some to pull of the upset. Like I said, most of us are just happy to be here, so we're just having some fun. Assuming yall get past us (hoping it doesn't happen, but knowing it probably will), I look forward to watching yall in the tourney. Iowa st is for real.

You've followed your team this season. It looks like it was rough early on against some high-caliber opponents. Your team being young, do you think that going through those tough games early has paid dividends? What are reasonable expectations of UAB next year? Another trip to the tournament?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

Also, your nickname is the Blazers and your logo is a dragon. Can you provide details on why this is so? Much like we are the Cyclones with a bird for a mascot, I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere...

OK, NOW I'll hang up and listen.

A dragon with fire blazing out if it's mouth, isn't it?

Welcome to the site. Had the opportunity to visit UAB a few years ago, and actually got to know a few grads. Came away very impressed. Birmingham is a pretty place. Good luck to you... (I mean, next year)

What's the deal with Birmingham? Tell me about your town. All I know is the Watsons went there for some reason I no longer remember.

Yeah, this team had a rough go of it early, nothing like having your first dozen or so college games consist of Wisconsin, Florida (I know, they weren't good, but still, the name strikes fear in younger players), UCLA (see Florida), LSU, and UNC. They just had to grow up and take their lumps, which they certainly did. With that though, it toughened them up for conference play, and made it easier, as they had played much tougher competition early on. We did not expect them to begin gelling like this though. Honestly, after our OOC slate, I had just hoped to reach double digit wins. This group came together though and proved everyone wrong, and had a very real shot at winning the regular season title, if not for some road hiccups.
We expect to be pretty darn good the next couple seasons. Assuming we are able to stay in C-USA, we should be in the top 2 or 3 for the foreseeable future. We expect to be able to get an at-large bid next year if we don't win the conference tourney.

As for the "Blazers/dragon" thing, I believe we're nicknamed the Blazers, because someone (maybe our first president, or athletic director, I'm not sure), said we were going to "blaze a trail" in college athletics or something similar to that. At least that's what I've heard. I don't think the dragon came around until 80's or 90's, I don't know for sure, I'm just a youngster compared to some fans.

Pretty fun city, especially for someone like me who didn't grow up around any big cities. The downtown area has been revitalized, at least somewhat, with new parks, a new minor league baseball stadium, new local breweries, restaurants, etc. It's quite amazing actually, in just the few short years I've been here, the city has gone from fairly boring to always having something to do, no matter the time or day.

ISU wins by 15+ IMO. UAB won't present much of a problem. Any problems will be created by our team for the most part. Our Cyclones must not beat themselves.

I can see ISU actually coming out strong with a big early lead, getting satisfied, and it getting very close at the end.

I'll MAYBE be able to follow the game at work, so having beers close isn't an option.

The most success UAB has ever had is that second that happens when someone says "University of Alabama" but right before they say "at Birmingham" and people think they're talking about the real University of Alabama for just an instant.

i assume you'd quit if that were the case

No, what my boss told me is that one day this week, they will just go and knock down some trees without cleaning up, which is what I do mostly, so I wouldn't have to go in...and also one day this week finish up another job which I'm thinking will only be about 2-3 hours, so I would be home just in time for the game if we did that Thursday. If not, then yeah, "calling in sick"
