UAB

UAB has a good young team, the third youngest in the NCAA this year and second youngest behind Kentucky in the tournament. We don't *quite* match their talent level, though...

The kids got pounded early, but they began to gel after Christmas. We were unbeaten at home through the conference season, then again in the tournament. It was held in Birmingham, but not on our home floor. I hear what you're saying about the quality of the conference teams, but it was the conference schedule, you know? The bottom half of the conference is horrible. I've watched us get road wins and the RPI went up.

We're not underestimating y'all. You have too good a team. OTOH, we're fans, you know we can't go "Oh god, it's over before we start, we'll never be able to win." The other side of that coin is that UAB has taken down a lot of good teams over the years. Early on it was Ralph Sampson's Virginia. It hasn't been that long since we made Ashley Judd cry when we dropped Kentucky as the #1 overall.

We'll see how it plays out on the court.

I'll close with Blazer85's sig line:

UAB BASKETBALL- In 35 years...
15 NCAA Tournament Appearances
3 Sweet Sixteen Appearances
1 Elite Eight Appearance
10 Conference Championships
30 Winning Seasons
21 20+ Winning Seasons
Last AP Top 25 Ranking: #25 (2010)
Highest AP Ranking: #9
All-time Program Record= 731-445 (.622)

(This used to look better but we got stuck with Mike Davis for a while. Bama guy. Sigh.)

As for the "Blazers/dragon" thing, I believe we're nicknamed the Blazers, because someone (maybe our first president, or athletic director, I'm not sure), said we were going to "blaze a trail" in college athletics or something similar to that. At least that's what I've heard. I don't think the dragon came around until 80's or 90's, I don't know for sure, I'm just a youngster compared to some fans.

More detective work is needed around this. Wikipedia indicates that UAB has had Blaze the Viking as a mascot as well as a rooster named Beauregard T. Rooster. From Viking to Rooster to Dragon. Surely a story exists.

Looks like the board ate my pending for mod approval post. Sigh.

Beauregard was fun and well liked, but the consensus was that he was too close to the San Diego Chicken. He was replaced by an incredibly dorky Viking who was universally loathed. All you need to know about him is that he is known to the old UAB fans who remember him as the "Big Gay Viking". :twitcy: Blaze the Dragon is our guy, and we love him, as well as the various uniforms and helmets with the dragon logo. Most recent football helmet looked like this:

Blazers is short for Trailblazers, as in blazing a trail into the future.

He's like the Emerald City gatekeeper from the Wizard of Oz!

I hesitated before searching google for Big Gay Viking, made sure to add the UAB.

Really glad you guys settled on the dragon, actually.

Yeah, now you know what the story was. CTown was right, there *was* a story... and once you see BGV, it makes a lot of sense.

I'd like to poke some fun at the opthalmologist rooster, but there's some old photos of Cy out there that I'm sure are unflattering. Mascot costumes have come a long way.

BGV...yikes. Good call to get away from that.

Well, the eye chart was for the referee. BTR nearly got run from that game, the ref didn't think that was near as funny as we did.

I think UAB should hire Bruce Van De Velde. He's a quality AD.

Well, two things are going on. We have an athletic task force charged with generating accurate numbers to prove football and athletics are viable. The Carr Report was so bogus and biased that it is worthless. They were to hire a big four accounting firm and an athletic consulting company to produce a new and accurate report. The idea was to have that in hand by April 2. Conference USA requires members to field a football team, and if we don't have one on the way back we'll get booted unless they make an exception for us. At that point we drop to the Sun Belt or the A-Sun and all our programs go in the dumper. Functionally we'll have a nonexistent athletic department, as coaches and players will abandon ship in search of a more appropriate home.

Watts rejected the choice of the athletic consulting firm, even though in theory the committee was to be independant. OSKR, the firm chosen, was involved in the Ed O'Bannon case on his side. Andy Schwartz of that firm had written two articles on vice.com running the Carr Report numbers and saying that they were garbage and made no sense. Watts said that proved that he was prejudiced and rejected them. Note that nothing was said when they were one of the finalists for the job, only ten days after the firm was selected did he hit reset. The other finalist was a guy who used to be a partner of Bill Carr of the Carr report and we weren't having that.

Anyhow... we wanted that done before putting in the new AD. Frankly, I don't know how you hire a decent AD given what's going on with the program. For that matter, we could very well lose Haase, especially if we are forced to drop in conference affiliation.

Killing football has so many ramifications across the athletic department and the campus at large. It's a mess.

Tim Brando has been giving the BoT and Paul Bryant Jr hell this morning on his Sirius show, lol.

Tell you what, you can have Herman Frazier and Lee Moon as co-AD's. That should cripple your program for the next fifteen years or so.

it is terrible UAB lost their football program, especially in a season a bowl bid was earned....the stadium they played in was outdated...but still, they recruited iowa athletes....it seems like a UA power play......
