I take classes at Ashford. Is it easy?? Hell Yes. Is it accredited?? Hell yes. My boses at work and I work at a giant company actually recomended it to me telling me it's easy and you get a degree and that is what you need. The Vice President of our company Fortune 500 actually takes classes at Ashford to get his masters. I don't care if it's a slip of paper that I easilly obtained. It does not bother me that the classes are barely college classes. I have anxiety when I am in a room to long and can't take normal classes due to my children and my classroom anxiety. Yet I can't get promoted with out that degree. It works for me. I don't care if its a diploma mill. I bet half the people that take online classes don't care either.

good luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions for "affordable" online degrees (BS or Masters) that aren't from degree mills? I am actually trying to learn some things but I don't think I can afford tuition from somewhere like ISU right now. I do have my bachelors from ISU though.

Do you have a particular subject area you are looking for, and how much money do you want to spend? First off, grad courses always cost more per credit hour than undergrad courses, regardless of traditional vs. online. Second, if you are going for a masters you may have to take the GMAT or GRE exams to get into grad school.

Im just completing my masters in accounting through the UoP. I obviously have my under grad through UNI. I will say this, the UoP taught me things about accounting that UNI was horrible on, self discipline, timeliness, preparation, and analysis. I learned more through the UoP than I did at UNI as I had to be self disciplined and work out problems and papers on my own. The teachers at the UoP are truly instructors, they teach you by grading papers and making comments on papers and your posts. You have to read the chapters and have that drive on your own. Really how much did everyone learn in college? I didnt learn jack, my first accounting job I was actually fired from because I knew very little, even though I did an internship, and I was a B to an A- student at UNI. Now after attaining my masters I believe my talents have helped learn accounting at more of a high level. I actually was just promoted three weeks ago and I know way more about accounting because of the UoP not UNI.

I would seriously look into the the University of Phoenix, I would put the education there up against any university.

Apple - iTunes U - Learn anything, anywhere, anytime.

You don't get credit, but there is a lot out there that is free to consume.

Yep, I haven't used that but have downloaded tons of other "classes" from other sources. Just looking for something to get on paper though. Looking for some sort of science degree (bio, environmental, or even chemistry) or econ / finance.

I have a lot of interests hence the wide array of possibilities. This isn't so much for career advancement as it is for personal advancement.

I actually learned plenty through ISU's Sociology and Criminal Justice Majors. It has been highly beneficial to my work at UNI for my masters degree in Counseling. I have found both my degrees rewarding, and have not felt inept in anyway during internship or mentorships through UNI right now in counseling.

Ever thought of going one class at a time? I mean it may be slow but if it is for personal advancement it shouldn't matter right?

Id like to see ISU offer more of its classes online. IMHO (and as a business major) there's no reason that most business majors cant be offered entirely online.

Is Iowa State much harder than Ashford? Yes it is. I could not get a degree at Iowa State. That is why I am at Ashford. You still have to write long *** papers at Ashford. I just wrote a 10 page paper and it took a lot of time and work. I probably would have received a worse grade at ISU than I did at Ashford. However, some companies require you have a degree to move up. I am doing it for that reason alone. I really don't care about the education part. I did 6 years in the Marines. I don't want to take the hard route any longer. Ashford works for me. University of Phoenix works for others.

For the record my company pays some of my school. I have the G.I bill for the rest and I pay what ever those two don't cover. So no I don't directly take the taxpayers money to complete college. If you want to consider taking the G.I bill money that I earned to complete my degree at Ashford then so be it.

:wideeyed: Isn't calling yourself doctor the reason that everyone goes to grad school?

Seneca Wallace.

Well, I did it so people can call me doctor. Just kidding, but what I mean is that many don't have the dedication or intelligence to do it but want the title.

No surprise here. Perhaps you did it for the coupons?

If you are just doing it for personal advancement, in addition the link Tyke provided, check out the MIT opecourseware site. They have syllabai, notes, and I think in a few places lecture for many courses from MIT. If you are self motivated, it is a great resource.

So it's a way for stupid people to pretend to be smart.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with getting a fake degree to make more money or get promoted, if that's all a particular company wants. But you're basically just buying a raise/promotion and if a company wouldn't promote you because you don't have a degree, regardless of your skills/performance then there may be bigger things to question. As long as those people don't try to compare their fake degrees to degrees that people actually had to work for from a real university I don't have a problem with it.

That is a little harsh. I don't think we are stupid. I think we need to do certain things to attain the level of success that we want. Same thing you did. I just went a different direction out of high school by joining the Marine Corps. I now have kids and don't have time to drive to Ames and get a degree. This way is easier and less hastle and I don't have to show up at certain times.
I would never compare a degree from Ashford with one from ISU. However, How stupid are we. Well my last name is not Latimore and he goes to ISU.

More detail please, I graduated from both a traditional school and an online one. I would call the traditional school "fake" I mean, like I said, I was a B to A- student at UNI and did not learn a damn thing and drank my life away. Now I have gained twice the knowledge and have had to put in more effort at the UoP than I did at UNI. So in my opinion the "fake" school is UNI.

Well, if you're a jock it can most likely happen.

Heck, Lucca Staiger practically took most of his classes on-line.

More and more large schools are going to online classes, and hopefully all have guidelines in place to keep up quality. I have taught online courses at a major university, and there is a process we have to go through. That said, it really does depend on the teacher's motivation a lot, but this can also be true of the traditional classroom. Lazy teachers will make for bad education.

The degree mills being online is not what makes them bad, it is the scamming and facade of education that does. I do think one can learn at these schools, but they have to put in their own time and also get lucky with the prof they happen to get.
