I play the guitar and would consider myself a late stage beginner, on the cusp of being an intermediate player. What many people don't realize, is the guitar is a young instrument. First "modern" accoustic guitars appeared in the 1830's and the first electric guitar in the 1930's. The guitar and guitar players are still evolving. Top players today are as a whole better players than their predecessors, however special musicians have emerged over the years that really moved the instrument and music forward. We stand on the backs of these musicians.

I vote Jimi Hendrix, as much of what we know as rock music doesn't exist without Hendrix in my opinion. Give someone like Hendrix modern tools and access to the vast history of styles and techniques, and he'd be a modern master too is my guess.

Here's some players I've been listening too lately and a song worth a listen.

Billy Strings- Turmoil & Tinfoil

Marcus King- The Well

Tommy Emmanuel (been around a long time but not well known outside guitar world) Lewis & Clark

Isato Nakagawa- Ramon no Ki

Calum Graham- Tabula Rasa

Ernesto Schnack - any of his Tool covers on Accoustic are killer good. Forty Six & 2

I'd have to go with Terry Kath, original member of Chicago. He's the only guy I know who could play lead and rhythm,,,at the same time. Jimi Hendrix once told the members of Chicago "Your guitar player is better than me."

Not 100% related to the thread title but I got a Boss GT 1000 today. Really blowing my mind everything it does, especially the amp modeling. Sounds just like my Fender Blues Deluxe amp when its in the 'deluxe' amp setting. Looping, recording, amp modeling, chaining pedals, tuner, effects pedal, and the ability to throw individual eqs on everything to get your tone dialed in. I don't even need an amp anymore. Pretty blown away because I have never liked digital pedals in the past.

Really great video where Tosin talks about his techniques. Really next level, never been done before stuff that can help us understand how he actually can do and sound like he does. They talk about a ton of really awesome guitar players and I'm ashamed to say I didn't know Stanley Jordan but that guy is crazy good. The more I try to learn and get better the worse I feel like I play lol!

@Gunnerclone I know you're a Tosin fan as well.

Been thinking about going that route. My pedal board is just more work than it’s worth. I would think you could dial that in pretty close for songs set it and then your good. Do they have patches you can download for specific songs?

Yes, there's even an active database where Pros will upload some of their tones. It is blowing my mind. I've started making my own tones from the ground up with this pedal now that I've got it figured out pretty well. It even records in midi. It's not as good as the Helix by line 6 which has more input methods and a mic input for easier recording, but its half the price!

Honestly, the sounds I'm getting out of my single coil pick ups, like melt your face off, heavy, crunchy distortion I have been yearning for without having to get a humbucker for 20 + years.

It allow you to sort of meld two channels together. For example to get a distortion that I want, really compressed, high gain, death metal stuff I use a recti stack with gain on the low. Then I use a second pedal chain with a x-modded amp with high gain. EQ's on both pedal channels, a boss comp before the guitar sound gets mixed into the two channels. It almost brings tears to my eyes how well I get my sound.

I did the same thing for a bluesy tone, but I made it so I could turn the over drives off on either channel, so effectively I get four tone just by choosing a combination of the over drives on the two pedal channels.

This is probably confusing without seeing the UI but just know I am beyond satisfied, and because I travel for work not having to haul my amp around is huge!

Let just go ahead and end this thread...SRV is the greatest ever by a wide margin. Need proof you say? I realize a lot of videos have been thrown around this thread but check this out...

SRV...strolls in to SOUND CHECK in a leopard spot fur coat and cowboy hat and just melts every face within 10 miles.

Stevie is my favorite but Tosin Abasi is transcendent. We haven't heard such a big jump in guitar prowess since Jimi. When you see how creative Tosin is getting, his 'selective picking' is a game changer. I already sort of do that when I play metal but he takes to another level.

That Guitar! Fanned frets, classical position ergonomics. Tosin is a dude.

Sounds incredible. Need to post pics of your custom in this thread when you get it.
Your wish is my command. Insanely happy with the neck! Koa top, Alder back, semi hollow body, 24 fret neck with birds eye maple and a vintage Nitro finish tinted to look like the old fenders.
Gonna be all gold hardware, with black pick ups and gold accents.

I don't get back from Orlando until August, so it will be some time before I can get it put together. I'll post the finished product when it's ready!

Looks incredible and sound fantastic with the Becks. Great choices for finish and hardware.

Didn't read through it. Did anyone mention Curtis Loew? Curtis Loew was the finest picker to ever play the blues.

I actually decided to go with DiMarzio single coil sized humbuckers. I want this to be a fusion type guitar with my mexi strat staying as it is (mostly because of sentimental value)
If I don't care for the sound, or want to go back to a classic single coil set up ill do that later. I went with the Air Norton at the neck, the Chopper at the middle, and the Super distortion at the bridge. Hopefully I can get a nice range of butter and crisp with the clarity I want when I crank the gain. The hollow body should give me nice harmonics as well.

There is no doubting that the writing got much simpler after Cliff's death. Miss that old Metallica even though I love the Black album and Load.

Peak Metallica right there. So far ahead of its time. I ended my Metallica run at the black album although I love the documentary they have when they’re going through the process of finding a new bass player and Twiggy from Marilyn Manson tries out.

As a JH kid I got into metal due to the black album. Started working my way backwards through the albums. Really loved all those albums, but MoP as the best mix of thrash elements and cool arrangements. I also loved the tones on And Justice For All.
Then Rust in Peace melted my ears and I became a Megadeth kid.
