Tip of the cap to @MeanDean - I think Alvin Lee is hugely underappreciated.

For my money, Eddie Van Halen played so wonderfully and (seemingly) effortlessly. He played sixteenth notes with his pinky, for heaven's sake.

And I have to say I really don't see what all the noise is about Clapton. Never really viewed him as a great guitar player.

Okay, start throwing the rotten vegetables at me.

But maybe one of the all time best that nobody really talks about was Prince. Watch his performance of "While My Guitar Gentle Weeps" at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of George Harrison. Amazing.
The beauty of Prince's playing is the feel.

There are some great solos initially in the song (first solo is note for note the same) but what makes it a great performance is how Prince takes it and makes it his own. It's just... effortless.

His Super Bowl performance is off the hook as well.

Thanks for posting the video. I remember reading a quote from Tom Petty after that performance and how blown away he was by Prince's solo. If I remember right they didn't even really rehearse it. Prince more or less did it on the fly. Still gives me chills.

a good thread.....i could add a few....Darrell Abott (Dimebag Darrell), Mark Kendall (Great White), Sturgill Simpson, Brian May (Queen), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and on and on....

A good watch is any of Crossroads Guitar Festival Concerts....a guitar festival, from old time blues, country, world music, to rock and roll. The talent that plays these is quite staggering.....they dont just let anyone on the stage...

Not an answer to your question because the postings have been pretty inclusive of all my favorites, but I did enjoy this video I watched recently listing the most influential guitar band of all time. I thought it was interesting to watch.

Plus, I just love watching Rick Beato videos anwyay.

Maybe its just the style of music I like but I think Derek Trucks is a master.

He is at slide. There is no one that has intonation and control with the slide like he has. Comes from great stock also (son of Butch, from the ABB). Here he is at 13 (!?):
