Sounds like Tumblr is teetering on the edge once again:

Indie Tumblr "replacement" Pillowfort is also facing closure unless funding is secured by end of year:

Cohost is on a bit more stable footing with increased subscriptions:

Investors pulled the plug on Pebble (née T2) a couple of weeks ago. This is the one that was billed as a kinder Twitter, but as I initially suspected, created a nanny vibe that killed it:

With Threads/Facebook, there's a lawsuit that said the Zuck overruled a bunch of execs, including Instagram's CEO, who wanted to ban/severely restrict beauty filters (etc) that were harming teen mental health. Good guy Zuck said no:

Twitter is even worse now - pretty impressive considering how terrible it already was when I started this thread.

Thoughts?

I saw today Omegle is shutting down too. I’ve never been on it but I run across Harry Mack videos from it all the time.

It's just such a time suck. And this is coming from a guy with 25k posts on here.
Places like this I don’t put in the same category as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Those types of interactions tend to just be scrolling nightmares for some folks.

Like some realignment threads around here?
Or “fire coach ___” threads/post-game loss threads late in a season near the end of a coach’s tenure.

I know people mention Twitter was toxic, but even when I left it wasn’t toxic to me, my thread/timeline/whatever it was called was sports news/news/ and cute animal pictures. I left because the search bar was autofilling in animal cruelty videos, and apparently animal cruelty videos were just showing up for people.

Plus, I know some people draw a distinction between social media and Cyclone Fanatic, but I don’t think there is one. Cyclone Fanatic is social media

Latest updates with the noted phrenology enthusiast:

This is such a critical time in our world filled with war, misinfo, inability to hold people accountable, etc. By actively engaging with and boosting white supremacists among other predilections, IMO the choice becomes more and more clear.

As for stories from elsewhere ...

Some companies and goverment entities have moved to Mastodon (etc.) as a way to push out updates (weather, school closings, announcements, etc.) and general news. I can see a world where Mastodon, Firefish, etc. have corporate servers that offer stability to users, along with smaller servers run by hobby groups, etc.

For example - Mozilla is working on their Mastodon site and I can see the ability for users to be plugged into social media (if desired) being folded into Firefox. Really no different from Google offering gmail users the ability to use other services.

CF could have a small server that is restricted to only staff members and contributors (Chris Williams, Blum, etc.) pushing out content and personal thoughts. That would keep overall server costs down and plug CF into the overall fediverse.

Thoughts?

This is interesting, and even if one disagrees with it or if one is an absolute Elon Musk fanboi, it does NOT deserve a "dumb" emoji. For shame!!!

I am about done with all of these sites. Whatever anyone moves to will just become another toxicity.
LinkedIn is already trending there.
I agree that most this is just a time suck. For example, instead of doing my 5 minute mediation before work this morning, I got on here and typed this. Probably not a great ROI, but oh well.

I gave them all (except CF) up in 1971.

Sorry but if your Twitter For You is filled with toxic ******** then it's because you engage in toxic ********. If your twitter following feed is filled with toxic ******** it's because you chose to follow toxic ********. It really isn't that hard to figure out. Some people think their **** doesn't stink when in reality it's them rolling in the pig pen everyday.

Everyone that is pumping these alternatives is just comical at this point. Threads was supposed to be the final death blow....welp that didn't happen. Bluesky? LOL. Mastodon? Niche (which is good IMHO) LinkedIn? Corporate Cringe

Companies pulling advertisements is nothing more then riding the current 15 seconds of attention. Deflects from their current flaws and past flaws.

Reddit is the same, there is so much trash on there too, but I can actively avoid it by muting or hiding content that I don't want to engage in. Every new one that comes out will be littered with subhuman culture, its the nature of the beast but there are ways to remove yourself from it.

What I don't get is Musk Melon suing? What for? Free market they can choose to advertise where they want and twitter isn't for them.

Elon Musk on Monday made good on his promise to sue Media Matters, filing a federal lawsuit that accuses the left-leaning watchdog group and one of its reporters of doctoring images in an article that showed ads for major corporations next to posts depicting hate speech on X, Musk’s social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
