Jamaal Tinsley opinion..

Supposedly Larry did just about everything he could to lose that game. He didn't think he had the team's attention and thought a bad loss would light a fire and make them bend to his will. Part of the story goes that ISU was behind and there was a timeout. The guys come over and Larry says, "You got yourselves into this, get yourselves out of it." and sent them right back out onto the floor.

I cannot attest to how much of this is factual and how much is urban legend, but it seems about right.

Damn, now you’ve got me wondering about the 44-48 loss to Drake the prior season - that stinker was one of only five losses that whole season. Was that actually a Eustachy-orchestrated motivational tool?

I wonder what JT FT% was in the last 5 minutes of games? I remember him missing FT in the middle of games but he always seemed to hit them when game was on the line. He could also post up anyone he wanted regardless of height disadvantage and make them look foolish.

I couldn’t have said it better. Tinsley was a great college player but he is not at Haliburton’s level. Cyclone fans underrate Haliburton because the team sucked when he was at ISU. He shot better than 50% overall and 40% from 3 pt while averaging more assists and less turnovers than Tinsley in his sophomore year playing for the worst college team in the nation.

We weren't very good Hali's sophomore year but far from the worst. That was the next season. We all love Tyrese and he is a much better pro than Jamaal, but Tinsley won back-to-back Big 12 titles and never lost in Hilton. I don't know that we'll ever have a player do that again.

A quick search and it looks like his closest wins in Hilton were his senior season:

*11/21/00 Opener vs. Morningside (OT, 102-97)
12/5/00 Southern Miss, 69-67

*They beat Missouri by 5, 86-81 in 99/00 but at least not in OT.

All in all that's dominant.

Wasn't that Morningside game technically an exhibition? or did it count?

Tinsley is one of the best players to ever play college basketball at Iowa State. A literal All-American, and THE key driver for 2 of the best seasons in Iowa State history, including (unequivocally the best season and team in our history). No, he wasn’t “good” because of team success (that assertion is certifiably asinine). He WAS the reason for the team success. Everyone who knows ball know this. It’s not in question.

Hali is obviously a better pro and on pace to become the BEST pro Iowa State has ever produced. Hali will become a legend (and he might be one already), and will continue to be a very different legend than Jamaal Tinsley.

It's incredibly stupid we don't have a Fizer and Tinsley jersey up in rafters. Just irrational.

Tinsley had no eligibility left, Fizer could have gone pro as a sophomore easily and came back for junior year. I love the newer class of legends like Monte, Ejim and Niang but it's going to feel wrong if they get honored and Fizer/Tinsley don't. I mean change the rules if the rules are that dumb.

I never said Tinsley was only good because his teams were good. What I said was that he got more attention than Haliburton because he played on a better team. Tinsley was a key part of some of the most successful teams in Iowa State history, but he also had a stronger supporting cast—Fizer (even if just for one year), Horton, Shirley, and Rancik. It’s not Haliburton’s fault that he had to play under a terrible coach.

There's something there really holding yiu back from admitting his talent or successes.
