This probably won't be popular but ISU needs to drop the Iowa game

Not gonna happen.

Beginning in 2017 Iowa will go to a 9th conference game. Replace North Dakota State with Michigan State and the schedule gets a lot tougher not just in terms of wins but the risk of injuries increases.

Twice in the last 10 years Iowa finished with 6 wins. Subtract one of the soft non-conference wins and replace it with a loss due to a 10th power 5 game and they don't make a bowl game. There could be pressure from both sides to end the series.

Take a look at how Pinkel built Missouri. Most ISU fans remember Missouri being a doormat - 15 consecutive losing seasons. When Pinkel got the job he paid a financial penalty to back out of a 4 game series with none other than Iowa because Pinkel wanted to be bowl eligible. Missouri's 4 non-conference games this year feature zero power 5 schools. If Pinkel had to play 10 power 5 opponents a year he would never have made it through his first 5 years. It isn't just Pinkel, most of the SEC coaches would never be in favor of a 9th conference game plus a power 5 non-conference opponent.

Bowl games are fun for the fans and attract recruits. How many recruits did ISU get because of the Iowa game?

We're getting few recruits due to that 5-19 problem.

Holy Flircking Shnit, you cannot possibly believe that about the SEC. Maybe in the East, but the entire West division was ranked just a week ago.

If you're constantly crying about how tough your schedule is, it's because your team just isn't very good.

The SEC gets a lot of schools ranked because the people doing the ranking are SEC fans. Look at what happened in the bowl games last year - the West was highly ranked all year and got stomped when they had to play outside the SEC.

I live in Columbia MO and it is obvious to me the SEC has been over hyped for years. Missouri hasn't won at Oklahoma since the 1960's - lost 24 consecutive years to Nebraska - and in only 3 years Missouri has beaten every SEC opponent at least once on the road and won the SEC East twice in three years with a roster of Midwest and Texas players.

Playing an instate rival from a P5 conference that ISU beats the majority of the time is not the reason ISU doesn't get recruits. It has a lot more to do with winning very few games with no signs of improvement.

Just for ***** and giggles:

ISU .500 or better against opponent since 1995
(min 2 games)
Army…..2-0
Baylor...6-6
UConn...1-1
KU?..Nope..9-11
Minny..1-1
NDSU…1-1 :-(
NIU….…2-1
UNI…...8-2
Ohio…..4-0
Toledo..2-1
Tulsa….2-1
UNLV...4-1

That’s not a lot of teams with only one in conference and not the one everyone would expect.
So after this year we will be 500 or better against no Big12 teams? Awesome......

I love totally made up facts.

I agree with the OP. Nine conference opponents is enough, and the only goal this football program should have at this point is making a bowl game. Even if Iowa State can beat Iowa most years, the wear and tear of the game can linger when games count in conference play.

This was simply addressing last 20 years. If ISU wins this year against KU they will take a L off the "last 20 years" and replace it with a win to be at .500 with them over that span even if (when) ISU loses to Baylor to go below .500.

As far as all time records, ISU is at or above .500 with only 1 Big 12 team: KSU at 49-45-3. Obviously it will take a few more years before the undead over in Manhattan can take that away from us.

The SEC starts out with a bad SOS, but then after they play their easy schedules the top half has a lot of easy wins driving up everyone's SOS.

I don't remember if it was last year or the year before, but it was staggering the different between the top half and bottom half. It's not like the Big12 where for the most part the whole conference is competitive with eachother. There aren't many free games on our schedule like other conferences have.

If we beat Iowa we were supposed to, if we lose we lost to an inferior opponent from an inferior conference....it's a no win situation....besides it's like their SuperBowl...we get their best effort every game.

By the way....**** IOWA

Dropping one of the easiest wins on our schedule isn't the answer to bowl games. Dropping the top half of our conference or just not sucking **** at football is the way to go to bowl games.

The Big 12 isn't even going to be that good this year. TCU and Oklahoma will destroy us. Baylor is overrated. OSU might be underrated and the rest are mediocre and beatable. Except Kansas who's probably the easiest win on the schedule, unless we have a team full of quitters like last year.

Very few schools play 10 power 5 opponents a year. For a coaching staff trying to build a program that is a steep hill to climb.

I know it is a rivalry and sells out the stadium but going to bowl games consistently would do more for the program.
I don't believe in a easy schedule to get a bowl game. We have too much of a rivalry with Iowa to drop the game for a patsy like Iowa seems to do with their non-conference opponents. Unfortunately, this year anyway, we were one of those easy wins to get towards bowl eligibility. If we would have played a second half that wouldn't have been the case.

I agree. The Iowa game is too big of an event for the state to even consider dropping, plus we can compete and often beat them. And if we schedule another patsy so we can get to a minor bowl with a 6 win season, then play badly and get beat by a team like Tulsa, that leaves a bad taste for the fans and recruits. Just get better and the bowl games will come, and we'll be able to compete with better teams and beat the mediocre teams in minor bowls. It seems like Iowa plays 10 FBS opponents most years, and I'm sure there are many others.

In the past 24 years, there has been only one time (2010) when we won 5 games and lost to Iowa. We would theoretically then only played in one more bowl game - had we defeated the team that replaced Iowa.
