Great interview! I always love to hear Johnny!!!
My favorite part was when he talked about his daughter calling him from Wallaby's in Ames last week while she was sitting next to McDermott and Grayer. Johnny told her to hand the phone over to Jeff and after congratulating Jeff on his coaching position he said "Get him some players! He needs some players!! Oh, and see what you can do to up the tempo.." (I'm obviously paraphrasing here). Got excited just listening to him. He also told the story of his first coaching job. Head coach. No experience coaching. Won the state title in Wisconsin in his first year. Got to love Johnny Orr!

While it might seem nice to have a legend out there helping out... and I'm sure Fred will want to consult him for his wisdom, I would see it being rather dangerous to actually have Johnny out on the floor with him

Too much nostalgia and it'd make it hard for Fred to leave his own mark on the program... a big name being trumped by an even bigger name, people thinking that everything happening is all Johnny's doing, etc.

I'm fine with there being a mentoring role there but I don't think it would be in anyone's long term interest for Fred to appear to be a shadow puppet of the second coming of Johnny

I totally agree and it would never happen. My point was that I love Johnny's enthusiasm.

One of the biggest and best hires ever at ISU. Doing something for him would be fanastic. He could use a little lift, with all he and his family is going through.

I don't understand why this has not been done. He is a larger than life personality and will live in the hearts of Cyclone fans for many years to come.

Because the womens team plays on the same floor and they have a coach who deserves some recognition. If MBB had their own place it would be a no-brainer.

I'm late to the party here but I still wanted to throw this in. I had a meeting in Ames today so I got to listen on my way home and got to hear the end of Fred's intereview, and all of Pollard's, Thompson's and finally Johnny's. Johnny is still a huge asset to the program and we're lucky that he still holds ISU in such high regard. His answers today had some great humor in them, but also some real insight into the challenges that Fred will face and what it will take to get back to where we want to be.

And speaking of stories, I got to golf 18 holes with Johnny back about 10 years ago. I'll go to my grave saying that it was the best day of my life that didn't involve my family. My ribs hurt for 2 days from laughing. A funny and truly great man!!

My first thought was "Johnny's Grill" so it is definitely close to that. And yes, it was in that area.

It was only around for a couple years wasn't it? I remember eating there when it first opened, but it was gone soon after.

Then it should be the Orr practice facility, but for some reason that just doesn't do the justice he deserves. He deserves something that has to do with the gameday atmosphere, he created it afterall.

What do you think we should do? could it be Bill's floor for women and Johnny's for men? I don't think that makes sense either. I just don't know what to do there, you bring up a valid point.
