The Painful Cyclone Realization

I would agree. The only real difference between last year and this year is the way the team has finished games out. This years team much like last years team seems to enjoy getting behind early... the same as last year. It feels different because last years team was able to erase some significant deficits to comeback and win games while this years team in some losses has gotten behind and hasn't been able to close the gap much.

Overall the results have been very similar as far as records go but it just feels a little different because of how they have got there.

I agree and I'll add that people also feel different because the overall record looks different than last year (going undefeated in non-con helps deal with BIG12 losses IMO). The overall record is always the first thing ppl look at because that is what ppl think matters when it comes tourny time (it does). Expectations weren't as high as this year so that had something to do with it too.

I'm just going to keep enjoying watching this team play.

It would be fun to watch this team and last year's team go at it on the court!

I'm actually only a junior in high school, so I'm used to the national program mentality if you could call it that

Congratulations on putting some work out there, I wouldn't have had the guts to do that in high school.

I am assuming you are interested in journalism/media as a career path? For future reference, try to add more substance to your article - facts, history, more depth of thought, etc. That will really help you out and it would really improve your writing. Right now, it looks more like a facebook post than an article, which is understandable given your age. You obviously have an interest in writing and a passion for sports, there is a future there if you work at it.

Good luck with writing if that is what you want to do for a career, I hope you go back to the drawing board, learn from this, and come out with some more stuff. I apologize for being hard on you earlier, easy to do when I am a nameless, faceless poster on CF.

I posted this screen grab from kenpom.com in a thread yesterday, but it's worth showing again. This team is almost identical from a statistical perspective to the team from last year:

This year on offense we shoot a bit better on 2pters but turn the ball over a bit more. Otherwise the percentages are exactly the same.

Defensively we block a few more shots, force a few more turnovers and keep our opponents off the line much better.

Well you are a solid writer. But like many of us (myself included), we need a cyclone class. This would include topics like:1. The McDermott years. The sad, ugly, and tragic 5 years of winning 16 or fewer games. 2. Down years. They happen to all programs (see Michigan)...fans should probably mentally prepare for it. 3. Having high expectations. You can have them but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy wins. 4. Iowa state basketball history. No coach has taken Iowa state to 3 straight ncaa tournaments. Fred has. Iowa state has never been to 4 straight ncaa's. Fred is close to doing that. 5. Fred hoiberg is coaching genius. Very rarely does a school like Iowa state have that. We have no idea how long we'll have him. For gods sake enjoy it.

My rant article on the Cyclones after the game on Monday

What a moronic article. I'm sure he was bit***ng and moaning after we lost at TT 2 years ago and at WVU last year, only to end up being only one call away from the Sweet Sixteen both years. And his biggest beef with BDJ and Nader is that they were late for practice, something for which Fred was benched when he played at ISU? Sheesh....

Clearly no benefit at all if the point of the article is to paint as bleak a picture as possible. Calling out specific players as the root cause is something of a low blow as well.

I want that conference championship as much as anyone. But I do NOT want to see us become that fanbase...the one that EXPECTS to win everything, and will never be happy with anything less, even if it's 100x better than what we had in the preceding 8 years...

Hopefully we won't become that fan base, but there sure are a lot of very vocal folks who already are! So many of us who have been through more than one lean "era" knows how great we've got it with Fred. Holy cow, I've been watching since JO started this thing and I can't imagine the crap we'd be hearing if message boards and the like had been around then! I would have had to unplug completely or light up my ignore feature beyond recognition.

i think I will try to post more stuff in here, I think people are getting the sense that I'm a hard *** that expects to win every game. I went way outside my realm on that article to make the tone more opinionated than not, and broke a lot of journalistic rules (on purpose) while doing so. My other articles have at least some structure.

And don't worry everyone's done that last part at some point

It's not like that was the main thing, it was more just about the past week or two. I'm not normally this negative.

Farminclone really hit the nail on the head here. I apologize for being a tool and so overly critical earlier. I didn't realize you were in high school, which really does explain your perspective on the basketball team. I too considered a career in journalism at one point and, to this day, still wish I had pursued it further. Keep at it and best of luck in the future.

I probably shouldn't have been as hard on ya, initially, but that's why I asked the question of how old you were. Sometimes as fans, we lose track of ourselves. That's just human nature. If anything, this will be good practice for you moving forward, as the anonymity people use behind message board names seem to make them tougher and more knowledgeable than they often really are.

Just know that we have something special in Fred here. As someone else mentioned, we don't know how long we'll have him, so we might as well sit back and watch the dreaminess at work. Some of the new fans may not know how good we have it, they'll learn someday.

Farminclone usually carries a level head (I've seen his posts on KU's board). I would suggest an age notation beside people's avatar. This way when us fans, other team's fans come to the board, there's an initial clue as to what they are dealing with when posting.

Completely agree, I think that's why my views are so different than everyone else's, I wasn't really there for the McDermott years (since we were so bad that I couldn't have cared less about the basketball team) and I sure as hell don't remember the Fizer or Hoiberg years.
