Even as an alum, I have enough nightmares about missing an exam/forgetting I had a class as a Senior, I ain't walking over that today.
that's funny. Recently my brother and I took my dad on a tour of ISU for a full day. He went there in the 50's, we both went in the 80's. We never talked about this before but during the tour of the buildings one of us mentioned that they still occasionally would have a nightmare/dream about missing a class at the beginning of the semester, or a major test, that we forgot about. We all stopped and looked at each other and found out that all of us still have that dream every once in a while.

Lately I saw one of those dumb accounts like "Iowa State Girls" Instagram and posted a "hilarious" video (someone linked to Facebook). It was a drunk of coeds hanging out in the Gold Star Hallway in the Memorial Union and being well, drunk, and stomping around on the zodiak and basically playing it like hopscotch.

I graduated in 2007 and the video actually made me pretty ******* pissed off. I started to wonder, what if students think about the zodiac throughout the years.

So, do you walk through or around go the zodiac in the Memorial Union?

I attended many moons ago, three of my kids have attended with my youngest enrolled now. To me it's like muscle memory to walk around it and I know my kids all walk around it.

To get mad at someone for walking over the top of it seems kind of petty to me. To each their own. Now if it was some burial ground or something then yes that would be disrespectful regardless of religion, etc.

I have this same reoccurring dream, usually about college and sometimes for high school. It's always about I forgot or they missed up calculated that I'm 7 credits short.

sometimes go back in walk into one classes and I am wearing Donald ducked.

This is funny. I asked my wife if she walked over or around the Zodiac when she was at ISU and she said around. When I said I would walk over it she looked aghast and said "Don't you respect the traditions of your university?!" Maybe the curse is real and it's just playing a long game by ruining my marriage.
This was the test you failed.

Walk around and would remove my hat/stocking cap when walking through the hood star hall. I worked as a cyclone aide and following/teaching the traditions was engrained in us. Being disrespectful in the hall is upsetting but walking over the zodiac is meh.

I used to stomp right in the middle to prove a point, never failed any tests. Then I decided not to be that guy and started walking around.

Failed my FE exam, last test at ISU. Guess I kinda deserved it:confused:

I feel like this is a way bigger deal to alumni and people who don't go to school there any more than ones that are actually on campus. I actually sat and watched for a while one day during lunch and way more people would just walk normally across it than around it when it was busy. I never thought that much about it when I was a student.

I can't remember what I did. Probably a mix of avoid and not avoid when like you mentioned it was busy or had my mind on other things.

Not to make this bigger than what it is lol, but I have to think everyone who walks across the zodiac just does so to be a contrarian "see everyone, look at me, I don't believe in the curse, I'm a loser and have no friends". Of course no one really believes you'll fail your next exam, you just do it because traditions are fun.

You're allowed to walk on it once after you've taken your last final but other than that if you step on the zodiac you're not cool. I feel like traditions are fading at ISU (veishea etc.), keep them.

On that note it's WAY past due for the return of veishea.
End rant.
Is it wrong that I miss all of the traditions of Veishea for the wrong reasons?

That's correct. Actually I am respecting the artist and his vision. He intended for it to be worn smooth by many years of being walked upon. The tradition is the corruption of what was intended to be an artwork collaborated on by students across the ages.
So you're saying the traditions at ISU are corrupt? You should probably just steal the swans, walk slowly and fully clothed between Beardshear and Curtis, request the cancellation of Juicy Wiggle, and not complain about how boring the Bells of Iowa State is as a song.

Anyone know how long this has been a thing at ISU? Cool to hear about people in the 70s-80s doing it too, love that it’s stuck around. Curious how long it’s held up
