Beth is in a pickle. With the EMBARRASSING apathy/attendance for men's basketball, she knows she can't ride this out for a couple more years with a lame duck coach who everyone wants gone, but she doesn't have the money to hire DeVries away from WVU since:
  • Her athletic department owes the University for the $50 million they borrowed during COVID.
  • It would cost several million to fire Fran.
  • It would cost several million or more (?) to cover DeVries's buyout from WVU.
  • She'd have to give DeVries a very handsome contract to get him to take over the dumpster fire.
  • And oh by the way, she has to have $20 million left over to pay all the Iowa athletes starting next year.
The only way I can see Beth pulling the trigger on Fran this season is if she has an excellent candidate waiting in the wings that she can get for a reasonable price.

Are you sure that's all Greg makes?
That was the number that was listed on the list I saw from 2023, his current salary is listed at $2.349 million for 2024, but you really have to wonder how accurate some of these list are for coaches at private schools that are not required by law to list the salaries of coaches and other staff.

Not at all but I'm guessing they buy him out. Fran is old enough I'd recommend hold out for the full buy out and make UofI pay my healthcare till medicare/aid( ?) Kicks in.
Nevermind he is 65 he's eligible.
They have a history of not paying their bills. Get that payola upfront.

He's owed 60% of his remaining salary.

He has 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 remaining. So he would be owed 6.48M. Plus the assistant buyouts, plus Devries Buyout. Iowa doesn't have THAT kind of money for basketball.
His buyout is only 37.5% of his remaining contract. Per Google.

In this age of immediate eligibility, it wouldn't take long for Devries to turn Iowa around. I think he waits on the Creighton job if he is to move.

Devries is in a perfect spot - his AD will do a Tang-contract and panic and extend him after one season (Javon Samll = Marquise Nowell?). (Yes I think Devries is a better coach, but its one year, with a stud pg, which helps massively). Even without a new contract he has a big buyout already at WVU.

He might get $4m/yr through 2032 at this point, and good luck Iowa stepping up to match/exceed that.
His contract says he gets an automatic extension if in top half of conference in first two years.

Devries would have to be an idiot to leave WVU. He's got a good thing going there. He's got fan support, he's got NIL support, he's got a decent base of players. Iowa has literally none of those things.

I don't know why Iowa State fans are wringing their hands over the Iowa job. TJ has a leg up on anyone who's hired.

That was for DeVries's buyout from WV, throw in Mad Fran's buyout and you are pushing $10 million between the two of the them, that would not include the EIU asst. coaches and the new contract for DeVries, which would have to start above what he is currently making at WV. Throw in the fact that EIU is currently in debt to the tune of $235 million. Unless some wealthy booster is coming up with a large check to handle most of the buyouts, I would guess that EIU will give him one more season to right the ship. Mad Fran is still recruiting like he is planning on being back next season, and they will return quite a few players off this years team, next season unless they jump into the portal.

KU fans seem to like DeVries. I could see self hanging it up soon if they continue to finish 3rd to 4th in the conference. I think it’s possible if DeVries continues to grow at WVU.

The financials of hiring DeVries is a good point.

The question that we’ll see about after the season is whether Fran is ready to move on or not. If so there will likely be a negotiated agreement that works for both him and UI. He’s made enough $$$ he’ll be fine.

Now, if he’s not ready to be done, he should hold out for all he’s owed.
