no you listen to yourself! bandies may be american. also in search of a dream that they actually effect the outcome of a game. but they are nothing like the rest of us. THEY HAVE BEEN LABELLED BAND "GEEKS" FOR A REASON!. generally the entire band knows nothing about the game of basketball and are just there to toot their horns. same as football. i've heard some of the absolutely dumbest crap come out of band members mouths at football games that its embarrassing. i dont care if they play, but if iowa state band members are the so called "pride of iowa state" then a requirement should be that our fans are actually proud of the stuff they do. please band. just keep it simple, play a few cool new tunes, play the fight song, yell loud (but not irrelevant crap) and enjoy cyclone athletics like normal people

Am I the only one who finds it hard to believe (not to mention a little sad) that the longest current thread on this forum outside of game threads is one about the pep band? Just sayin......

10 pages later a lot of valid opinions from different viewpoints have been shared. I'm glad we're really hashing this one out

I wanted to avoid posting in this thread, but I can't help but clarify something. The band isn't trying to entertain you with the chants, they're trying to distract the opposing players. Does it work? Probably not, but they're having fun doing it, so they don't care.

That said, hate the band all you want, you're entitled to your opinion.

If only the opposing team hated the band chants as much as our own fans do.

Also, very surprising only a few old timers chimed in with "back in the day" stories.

Not to stick up for the bandies, but for everyone complaining, noted musical fan Mr. Rodgers would like to weigh in:

Posting this just in case that last one gets deleted. Not reposting, but it's like one of those crucifixes on the highway. One of my good ones expired here.

It seems like cowbell should be placed later in the game to match football.

Yes, like an hour after everyone has gone home. Dumbest thing going right now and it is by no means a tradition. It's being shoved down everyone's throats like it or not. If the band wants to do it themselves like they have for years then have at it but don't try to make everyone join in.

the band needs to shut the **** up

bunch of nerds who think theyre funny and trying to bring attention to themselves

It sure would be nice if people could leave their too cool for school ******** attitudes back in high school where they belong. Without fail around 20 threads will be started this year about low-energy in Hilton during games, but by all means, let's all **** on the 50 people trying to something, ANYTHING to generate some noise and interaction from the crowd.

Are there some band kids that think they are God's gift to Hilton Coliseum? There were when I was in band and I'm sure there are some now. But by and large most of the band are just psyched that playing an instrument gets them into games for free and take it seriously that they are there to support the team by being enthusiastic. And maybe actually have some fun, god forbid!

Do you really think that stuff like cowbell is done because the band wants to make it about them? It's done to try to eliminate dead periods in the crowd by trying to get students to get off their cell phones/***** and keep going crazy through a timeout. You don't like the cheers? Neither did I! And I'm 90% positive that if the student section got their **** together enough to do something during free throws on their own all of those "weirdo amaetuer comedians" would just go along with that. But you don't, so they do the best the can.

Rant over.

Not to nitpick, but how the hell are you hearing what band people are saying at football games? Unless you are a field worker by the Jacobsen building during football games I am calling BS on that one.

And of course there are people in the band who are not super knowledgeable about football/basketball. That is different than any other section in Jack Trice/Hilton how?
