must be the only gas station in America that doesnt require prepayment of gas.
Growing up and living in the midwest my entire life, I would say its a lot more rare for me to run into a prepayment for gas (not counting Chicago) than not.
Of course, the vast majority of the time I pay with CC anyways, so some of those stations could have been prepayment.

Unfortunately, the driver is the one that usually survives something like this. And like many young criminals, by the time he goes to court, his parents and lawyers may have him convinced he is the victim. Hope he really does "have to live with it the rest of his life", but too many just go on as if it never happened.

I can't remember, but I think I read some study that was done on why Gas stations still do this...

#1. If they can get you in the store they can sell you stuff.
I am the worst offender of this. I normally get a slice of pizza and a fountian drink when I get gas. arrgh...

What a tragedy! Wouldn't you know the one responsible is the only one that walked away with minor injuries.

i see you are in D.C., this was in Ames. most big cities (more crime) are prepay. and it's smart, but I personally hate it. I think we should make it all payments need to be CC/DC at the pump, and if you don't HAVE a DC or CC...then you prolly shouldn't be driving a car/purchasing gas. IMO

I kinda agree with this. It's been well over a decade since I've paid cash for gas (always on the CC now), but I remember once before that string going through Kansas City and having to stop for gas and being required to pre-pay. I thought it was the dumbest thing ever, because how the hell am I supposed to know how much it's going to take to fill the stupid tank up?

Consequently, ever since then, I've used the credit card. And ever since then, I've never, EVER stepped foot into a gas station after filling up.

Easy solution to this (from the city\police perspective) and has been done in some places already, would be to say that police will not chase drive-offs anymore. This would encourage gas stations to either require prepay\credit card, or install cameras that can be used to track down a car owner without the need for a potential chase which not only endangers the chasee, but the officer and any other drivers and pedestrians in their path.

There are still gas stations that allow you to pump before paying? Especially at night?
A lot of those places are trying to entice the consumer into the convenience store, in hopes they will purchase more (foot, beverages, etc.) If gas stations sold gas only and nothing else, they would end up losing money.

The cars that chose to pay inside after filling, the gas stations take down the who, what, when, where, and license plate if they drive off.

almost all the stations in CR are prepay now. Certainly the Caseys and Hyvees.

I don't have a CC or DC & I seem to get through life just fine. I don't see to many signs around saying they don't take cash or the machine won't work for cash.

Why Iowa doesn't require everyone to prepay I will never understand. I think it is the midwest attitude that people are more honest and trustworthy here. Sadly that attitude results in countless thefts and death. Pre pay works everywhere else in the country. It shouldn't be to difficult for Iowa to figure out.

Reminds me of a story. When I lived out in California my Grandpa came from Iowa to visit. We stopped at the gas station and he started to try and pump gas and couldn't figure out why it wasn't pumping. I looked at him and couldn't figure out how he expected to pump gas without paying. I informed him he had to pay first and we were able to pump gas. He informed me that in Iowa you pump then pay. I told him that I thought that was a stupid idea and we went on our way.

Its been about 8 years since I bought gas without a credit card, but down here, we have a chain of gas stations who advertise that they don't require paying before. They also have a loyalty card you can get from them that will turn on the pump without having to have an attendant turn it on for you. Actually, I kind of wonder why more places don't do it the 'If you have our card (like best buy rewards zone, not like a cc) you don't have to prepay' thing.
