Way to go iowa state, the unofficial celebration will continue. Won't be shocked when something worse happens down the line in 2 or 3 years

What does "smaller event" entail? A concert here and a parade there?

Meh, maybe. 04 was much destructive and nothing happened in following years.

I don't care what they call it, but can we still have a big concert with big name artists? Thanks.

I doubt that the "unofficial" VEISHEA is going to be "worse" now that they cancelled it.

I was in school the last time VEISHEA was cancelled and I can't even remember what we did that week, it was such a non-event. People weren't rioting in protest.

Ya probably, but until a cycle of students move on Veisha week will still be celebrated no matter if its official or not. Probably not on the same level but will still be carried out at least for a couple of years is my guess.

No it won't. I thought the same thing in 2005 after the '04 riot canceled VEISHEA. Nothing happened (outside of the ordinary parties/bar hopping, ect.)

Mixed feelings for sure. I was really hoping the recommendation would be for a 1-3 year hiatus and then bring it back. I could have supported that.

This...it just feels like the wrong way to handle it. You just know that they are still going to have some sort of alcohol-fueled spring incident in another 3-4 years, proving that the official celebration and this aren't all that related. But of course, once it's gone, it won't come back.

This is truely a sad sad day. Really wish this wasn't the recommendation. Sad we can't have nice things. Sad for the future generations.

There won't be an unofficial VEISHEA week outside of a few knuckleheads who try to proclaim it. Students will carry on as if it's just another weekend.

It wasn't the original expectation...but it definitely became an excuse in recent years....and that disgusts me.
What is "recent"? Bad behavior has been happening every couple of years for the last 3 decades; basically a third of its existence. I agree it's not what it was meant to be at all, but this is more than a fool-me-once scenario.

Disappointing. At least a lot of alumni did their part and expressed at the open forums that they wanted VEISHEA to continue. But it was basically doomed from the beginning since Tom Hill selected a committee with people who wanted VEISHEA gone. It doesn't surprise me that this is the recommendation. Farewell to one of the very few ISU traditions.

There were a ton of out of town people in Ames that week in 05. They cancelled the name of VEISHEA, but still had a majority of the events the same week (there were small concerts near the MU, I think that was the year Dave Attell showed up at Hilton, and the play at Fisher still went on). For all intents and purposes, VEISHEA was not really cancelled in 05.

Sorry... but yes it was. Yes there werea couple of small things. I think the performances in Fisher aren't technically affiliated with VEISHEA so they were allowed to go on. Even with a couple of those isolated events it wasn't even close to being a shell of what VEISHEA is (was).

Attell was in in '06 too.
