It would definitely be odd to not have a KU(big 12 champions) player on the first team. When's the last time that happened?

I think Morris takes 1st team and Niang takes 2nd team. Niang (for several reasons) has been less consistent this year and his numbers aren't as good as most were expecting (again, for several reasons). I don't know how anybody could say Mason has been better than Morris.

So the 'team' is freshman/transfers combined but the award is only for best transfer?

There is only one team for newcomers and freshmen (All Rookie Team), but there are two separate individual awards for top freshman and top newcomer.

Other awards missing here are Defensive Player of the year, Sixth Man Award and Coach of the Year.

I think if Self wins the conference alone he wins the COY. If Fred gets a piece of the conference crown I think he would win it. They really should take Barnes 2014 award away from him so that both Fred and Bill each get a trophy. It bugged me last year when he won that pretty much just because his team woefully underperformed in 2013.

I don't think there is any way that KU wins or shares the conference crown without having at least one player on the first team. They would probably get both Mason and Ellis - deserved or not.

Exactly - Kane won newcomer award, but Wiggins won freshman of the year, while Kane, Embid, Wiggins, Foster, and I Taylor made the All-Newcomer team

Gathers is definitely first team, he's in the running for POY.

I don't see Gathers getting MVP. Although he's the best rebounder in the conference, he doesn't add much more than that. Georges gives you more assists, 3-pt shooting, ball handling, etc., and is "The Closer" for the team. I don't see any coach (other than Drew) picking Gathers over Niang if they were putting together a team. If we end up tying or winning the conference, I think Niang gets very serious consideration for MVP.

I'm not seeing it with Niang or Staten at all. Advanced stats as of a week ago:

Niang was 3rd Team Big 12 last season, and his offensive stats are basically the same as last year. He's around the middle of the pack in conference play in PER, TS%, ORtg, and he's still a negative rebounder and a negative on defense.

It seems pretty clear to me that Monte has been ISU's best player in conference play, and is the most deserving ISU player for 1st Team honors.

You could be right but aren't we talking about the same body that picks ISU 4-5 spots lower than they finish every single year and had KSU in front of them this year?

Only thing I'd say on that is it's organized by PER which will usually be dominated by big men, Georges does things for our offense the other big men on there don't. He and Monte combined are a big reason we have 6 guys in double figures.

I'd probably go Hield for POY.

For 1st team:
Hield
Gathers
Morris
Ellis
Nash

I'm talking about how I would pick the teams. I agree that the people that actually do the picking are mostly inept, and almost certainly aren't digging into the stats as much as I am.

And you can organize that data a lot of different ways, and Niang would be near the bottom of that grouping, which you can see in the color formatting.

Niang closed out WVU and Okie State on the road, shredded Texas' zone at home, is game planned against, 1st team deserving IMO and I bet the coaches feel that too

I agree. I think Niang likely will be but Monte likely should be. Last year we had 3 guys who definitely deserved some all conference recognition (2 1st team locks) then some drop off in production. This year we have 5 who all have a great resume for 1st to 3rd team.

We're getting the biggest contribution from our 4-6th best players in my opinion. Hogue or Naz may not be considered for 3rd team, but I guarantee you they worry opposing coaches more than some guys who will. They both can just wreck a team on a given night.

Even his freshman year he was a clutch player scoring in isolation, he has moments where he's bigger than stats.

There's no doubt in my mind his ability to help break the press is why we swept WVU. Really we blew them out twice if @WVU hadn't been atrociously officiated. Where's the stat for big man who is a prototype player for beating the press?

Niang to the NBA is a hashed out conversation and I'm not going that direction, but when it comes to NCAA he is a great isolation mismatch player closing out games like every NBA team needs.
