I think we're outmanned. You can't honestly say they aren't trying hard... like they just want to show up and half-*** it and be done playing for their career. C'mon... we've got a serious talent deficiency compared to the other teams AND we're running on empty with such a shallow team. Sorry. I don't buy that they're not playing hard.

Well, Fred just said on the post-game that his team didn't "compete" enough tonight. Kinda think that's coach-speak for "effort," don't you?
Also, Eric Heft is usually Mr. Sunshine, but even he sounded disgusted about the defensive effort, for virtually the entire game.
So, I'll side with Fred and Eric, and say they're not playing hard...

This whole team is full of guys that are asked to do something they dont normally or can't do.

DG has to be (and is) our only ball handler but he has to be the leading scorer too???

JVB is our tallest player but because he is a pick and pop SHOOTER, people criticize him for not being a post presence

Ejim is a freshman and is playing more minutes than he ever did at high school/prep school. Plus, he is playing at the 4 when he clearly should be playing at the 3

Jake is our leading rebounder??? at 6'2"???

Bubu is a walk-on playing significant minutes

Scotty is counted on to be the leading scorer when DG is off

McKnight and Railey should be redshirting

Mitchell and McBeth didnt even play basketball 3 weeks ago

I gave this team 13 wins and even though they have struggled (like tonight) and let games slip away (Nebraska, OSU, Cal, etc) I'm very proud of the way they have played. Somebody tell me an ISU team that was as undermanned as this team

I was very pleasantly surprised and pleased with the first 2 and a half months of this season...and whether they lose or not, I will be proud of them if they compete and play hard the rest of the way.

But the Missouri, Texas Tech, and Colorado games have been pretty pathetic from an effort standpoint and I'd say fair to criticize. Whether we are talented or not, effort should not need to be questioned.

It's kind of difficult to play hard all the time when you're playing 35-40 minutes every game. The legs were eventually going to give out and it looks like they finally have. You better get use to these kind of games for the rest of the year.

Orr used to say that by the time your a senior, you should be able to play 40 minutes a game...

These guys are 18-22 year olds in the best shape of their life. It's not too much to ask to have them play hard all the time. Our elite 8 team had little to no depth, with Brandon Hawkins being the lone perimeter player coming off the bench, and you never had to question their effort.

I love reading the posts in this thread. The meltdownability (it's my made-up word for the day) of this board is just too good to be true sometimes. Of course CFH's seat isn't hot. He's coached what, 25 games? If you really had thoughts of playing in any tourney at the end of the season, you're either mentally unstable or drank wayyyy too much kool-aid after beating the sisters of the poor and the Helen Keller School for the Blind. A bench this shallow in the Big 12 spells disaster. This team may win one more game this season and honestly, I really don't see the shame in that considering what the past few years looked like.

For you downers out there, think about this... GMac is still the coach. You have his class coming in next year, which includes exactly zero of our transfers. How does that make you feel? Things can ALWAYS be worse.

Really???REALLY?? WTF?? On the hot seat in year one with no players and few expectations before the season that they would even win as many as they have. And I doubt anyone wants to get this program back on track or is any bigger fan of ISU than CFH himselfnot even you or me. Get a grip and see where we are in two years.

I'm not hearing too many posters expecting more out of the season. They over performed during out of conf sched.

Exactly. Many realized prior to the season that the conference schedule could toss up a few red flags. Well, the flags are flying as pretty much expected. Take this year with a grain of salt and see what shakes down next year.

But one good sign at least for my concern, I'd lost interest in ISU basketball a few years back (was NEVER a fan of the McD hire) but I found myself getting ****** from losing all the close games this year....that tells me I'm becoming interested again as I'm becoming emotionally vested once again and I actually can't wait to see what happens next season.

The real question is, would GMac have done better if we would have kept him.

My answer is no.

I'm thinking we give our coaches more than 2/3rds of one season before we starting saying their job is in jeopardy. Good god man.

Ragging on first year coaches is pretty common here. Remember Chizek, McCarney, and McDermott's first years? But what happens to Fred in this first year isn't going to be all that important in the big scheme of things.

I expected this particular team to get whalloped on the road. I wanted them to hold serve at home, particularly against the bottom half of the league, and that has been the most disappointing aspect so far.

This team does not have anyone who can score inside, and is a poor rebounding team. In league play where possessions really count, high percentage shot selection and limiting opponents' possessions through good rebounding make a huge difference, IMO.

When this team is "on" they are extremely fun to watch. But this team is not built to win 20 games. I raised my expectations based on the start like many others, but have had to be more realistic about them lately. The guys play hard for ISU, we should be proud of them and Fred for that, but they have their limitations and they are not small ones.

We basically have 6 guys right now... and one of them is a walk-on. You cannot win in the Big 12 with that. You just can't.

The one thing that I'd like to see though is some defense. Even if we lose, I'd feel better if I saw us playing some defense. Teams are just getting uncontested layups on us now. That is not acceptable.

Too many heartbreaking losses. This team has lost all confidence and swagger (and players). What a shame, they were really playing at a pretty high level.

Fred has gotten more pout of less talent than anyone could imangine.
Three real close games, could have been wins, five losses, not bad for a team with 2 returning seniors, 1 transfer senior, 1 returning starter, 1 walkon, and 4 freshmen.
Let me guess you expected we'd go to March madness????? REALLY!
Put down the cheap beer can, step away from the weed, get a breath of fresh air, and see the transformation, it is occuring over time, you impatient bozo.

Go Cyclone! SEMPER FI !
