very thorough email just came out from the principal.

confirmed knife brought in from outside & two students treated for non-life threatening injuries.

this was the communication we wanted 2 hours ago, but better late than never. I'm sure the principal has been part of the incident response and this is his first moment at a computer.

Man that is so young to be doing something like that. Not that any age is good but middle school is generally 5th through 8th grade.

here it's just 7th & 8th, they have a separate building for 4th-6th.

suspect was an 8th grade boy, injured a 7th grader & an 8th grader, one was girl not sure of the other. non-lifethreatning injuries.

Like you said, it is probably the first chance they had to make a more detailed response because he put your child’s and the other children’s safety as the main priority.

It does take some time for the school to figure out what has happened, and then what they are going to do about it. Most schools would have the info. on their website and be sending out emails to everyone that has signed up to receive them in a timely manner. I get parents are freaking out, but it does take some time to access just what happened and how the district is going to respond.

We have friends that literally just moved there, their son played on my middle kid's club baseball team. They probably have been in class for like a week. Not exactly what you're hoping for there.

This is more than being scared of going to school, I could see this being scared of going out in public or scared of social interaction. I really hope her parents can get her good psychological support.

not gonna post the name of the kid although it's pretty known now locally. he transferred in after a previous incident of throwing chairs at his previous school.

he is described as "quiet and withdrawn, but not disliked or unpopular". I guess I don't want to ruin his life in 8th grade, although he's tryin pretty hard on his own

It's tough, because public schools have a mandate to teach kids.

But if I'm being honest, I'm done with this stuff. If you are violent or destructive, you get kicked out of your school, you can go someplace like Woodward or you can be home schooled. You don't need to be in a normal learning environment anymore and I don't think schools should be required to take you.

I've (thankfully) only witnessed one life-threatening situation at work about 10 years ago and the two people who remained calm and took charge were military vets. It was a very profound thing to see in comparison to the way others reacted.

btw, this is only gonna harden my stance against taking phones away from kids lol. not sure I can get on Keith Murphy's side of that while this crap keeps happening - only up-to-date info parents received was via their kid's phones.

Yes. There may be a "waiver" hearing in the juvenile court to decide if the minor should be tried as an adult. This may take place if a case involves serious or violent criminal behavior and the minor is at least 14 years old.

This kid will be expelled at the next board meeting. If he was new to the district, they will not want to mess around and give him a second opportunity to harm anyone. He will become someone else's problem and the school board will wash their hands of the whole thing. The big question will be how the knife got into the school, so items like backpacks will either be done away with or searched for the near future.

Don't want to derail the thread, just saying that taking a phone away from a HS teen can create a lot of new mental health stressors on them.

I disagree completely. I'll have a kid starting school in a few years and I hope they ban cell phones in school. I won't be giving her a phone that does anything more than call or text until she's over 16 either.

Kids being glued to smart phones is a massive ******* problem and we need to not let it continue, societally.

A basic call/text type of phone? I'm fine with a kid having that. But no apps or internet.
