Hearing that Missouri ended up wanting to go a different path (likely in house DC) and freed Campbell up to decide between Toledo and ISU. Sounds like Toledo offered at around 900k for 10 years but couldn't go any higher. ISU won the bidding war (clearly wasn't much of a struggle) and a big emphasis will be put on a competitive assistant package. Ayeni expected to stay, discussions ongoing relating to other possible holdovers.

Isn't the bolded part what people were so adamant about? I feel like we got what we wanted (a proven head coach) while still being able to pay for the things we need (solid recruiters) to build this program up.
And if we have success I think that it also raises the possibility of being able to promote a coordinator if Campbell gets a better offer. I know that's looking too far ahead but in the end I'm happy we got someone that was sought after even though Ubben and others think it's a low-level job.

I'm happy with it too, especially in light of the assistant package information. People are worried that he can't recruit Texas... well he can hire someone who can. We know he's keeping Ayeni, but everyone else is up for grabs. I'm assuming this is the end of Burnham, and possibly his son as well. The younger Mangino is probably gone as well. Who knows about Sturdy.

But with all of those positions open, he'll be able to hire competent coaches and recruiters without issue. I'm very, very excited to see what comes of this.

Originally I was worried since his main recruiting ground is Ohio/Western PA but in the end that's just another potential place to recruit now. As long he fills up his staff with some combination of people who can recruit Texas, Florida, California, and JUCOs I feel like he has a great chance for success here.
All of that is easier said than done, but the more I digest it the more I like this hire. It's basically just like the Prohm hire for me at least.

Congratulations to Matt! Well earned and he knows what he is getting into.

I am curious to see if he and Pollard recognize what caused Rhoads, Chizek and McArney to fail. The lack of attracting top flight coordinators and putting your personal relationships above the needs of the program. Let's hope he learns from it and brings guys in that can recruit, teach and gameplan against as good a slate of Coaches as anyone will see.

Also, will Jamie take this opportunity to rebrand the program, revamp gameday experience, change uni's etc. Make it feel different. These little things matter.

This is excellent news. Bodes well for ISU.

Got a new young coach with much potential very quickly. A coach that some national pundits thought was out of our league.

Now get a staff in place and soldify next year's class.

Fyi, can't wait to buy next year's season tickets.

How the hell did this thread happen without me having a comment on it?

If we ever find out that aliens have replaced me with a clone ala Invasion of the Body Snatchers, November 28th, 2015 is when it happened.

I know I was pretty much over ISU football at the time Campbell was hired. I didn’t really care who got hired. Now I’m happy though!

No comments from me either. That's better than saying something dumb.

I have to admit though that I had some of the same concerns as D_UP. I also posted some pretty sharp criticism of Campbell after the 2016 debacle in Iowa City. Fortunately, Campbell hit rock bottom early in his tenure at ISU!

I was impressed how Pollard was able to get him Looked like a good fit from the start. Totally sold after the first season. Saw great progress in the team.

Go back and read D UP Clones takes on this hire. Wonder if he is on board yet or changed his screen name because of this.

Also, who built Toledo into being a solid program? It certainly wasn't Campbell.

Strike 1
I would prefer Fritz, or Monken honestly.

Strike 2
I'm on-board so long as he has at least 7 fake punt plays and he uses them each game.

You're gonna have a bad time.

Recruiting was my number one criteria in this search, so I don't know what to think.

Just lay back and take it.

He was the 4th coach in a decade...I didn't not like the hire, but my expectation was same 'ol same ol' at that point.
