Should coaches work out or just coach?

This has been a debate back and forth lately with some of my buddies. If you look at that ISU room, I would argue this coaching staff is one of the best from the accomplishment side of things. I also know that St. John will get some live go's in but I do not think Metcalf does a whole lot of live go's. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but the debate was coming from some Okie State buddies. DT requires ALL coaches go lives, and work out with the wrestlers. If I were a coach, and I had that kind of staff and wins between them, I would want them wrestling a lot with my guys. Now, one might say "what is considered a fair amount of wrestling with staff" and I really don't know the answer. I wanted to get a discussion going on what we think here at Iowa State. In a perfect world, I would want a smaller coach, a mid weight coach, an upper weight coach, all so they could go with the wrestlers. Then have a HC, the brains behind the staff. RTC coaches obviously help, and I know DC is in there rolling around and working with a lot of the kids for extra work.

I just automatically assumed the coaches were working out right along with the guys.

I don't think it is an every day thing, I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Again, this is not a knock, I am truly asking. Maple went every day, now he is getting older, I am told it is just a few times a week, or "when needed". Ian Miller was an every day guy too at Oregon St and App St. Is that rare?

When I was in junior high, I had to miss wrestling practice for a family event. The coach made me wrestle him before I left. It was weird.
Odd, not sure where you wrestled at, but in our room I wanted my kid to wrestle our HC and Asst. Both were D2 national champs.

Not exactly sure.
Wrestling them can very well be coaching. If a wrestler is struggling with a specific area, it may be the most efficient to have the coach hammer that part than to have another wrestler spend their limited time improving that area for their teammate while they don’t get to drill things they want/need

Our HS coaches wrestled in practice to provide better competition for our best guys.

To answer the original question I think success can be achieved multiple ways. Dr. Harold Nichols probably didn't wrestle that much but he's got a banner hanging in Hilton.

I assume our coaches (At least Dresser) are more than happy and eager to jump in and "wrestle" or walk through stuff with the guys. DSJ and Metcalf probably more so and at a faster/higher level than Dresser can due to age.

Football coaches will jump in on a similar level but for obvious reasons only to an extent.

I think the Metcalf and St John did wrestle a lot with the wrestlers 5-8 years ago. I also they still do some, but like anyone, they are getting older. I think last year or 2 years ago St John had to have surgery on a knee or something.

Taylor can say that because him and Gilman are a lot younger. Curious how much Kennedy go live.

Also I would guess Cael and Cody might do some drill, but l would think that live go's are getting fewer and farther between.

Whether or not your coaches go live depends on lots of factors.

It is critical for the younger college guys to have high level opponents to wrestle with. That can be coaches, but doesn’t have to be. You can fill that gap with RTC guys (Carr, Coleman, Ortega) and the older guys on the team. If someone like Metcalf can still jump in from time to time, that is great.

seems to be a hit at OSU, and kids seem to be drawn to the idea of wrestling DT, Gillman etc. I agree RTC is important, and who would not want to roll with David Carr?

Great topic. I am a high school track coach and ran track at Iowa State. When I first took the job (actually lets be honest, they caught wind that I ran for Iowa State in college and their current coach was basically the football coach coaching football in the spring), the team was bad. Very bad. They didnt have a clue how to run much less, race. I was also a first time coach. I knew how to run, but was still learning how to coach. So I ran in practice with them. The kids automatically gave better effort since they didn't want me to beat them every rep and it was a way for me to "teach" them how to race until I got the experience to be able to use my words.

The key was after about 10 years I had to hang it up, the culture of our program changed and I expected them to run faster than I could at the time. If I practiced with them they would just run to beat me and not go as fast as I wanted them to. Luckily during those 10 years I learned how to coach and now it is a do as I say not as I do.

Also very important....... a few kids know because they did some digging and a few others have learned because all my sons have gone through our programs, but I also refrain at all costs from telling the "glory day" stories. I was a Division 1 athlete. In 13 years I have yet to see any of my athletes who were Division 1 material. I feel nothing will lose a kid faster than saying " Ok fellas today we have repeat 300's at 46 seconds. Gonna be tough, so suck it up because when I was your age I was doing them in 43. " That dont work for todays teenagers.

And if you don’t have a lot of staff turnover, they get older!!!

Ok State is still in their infancy. Do you know how much Kennedy goes live?
