He is going to be a solid player. Wouldn't be surprised if he left after this year. I really don't see where he is going to get more playing time next year. Where does he fit in? Pretty clear that Morris, Thomas, Naz, Custer, and possibly Vaughn will be the core of the backcourt.

Welcome to my ignore list, knucklehead.

Why is everyone so certain Nader will start? His stats at NIU aren't bad but they don't exactly blow a person out of the water either. Hogue has been very solid and Niang is a no-brainer to start so I'm hesitant to label a guy who hasn't played in a major conference a starter before his first game.

I agree and i dont see how Hogue will lose his starting spot especially for how he has played. That guy plays extremely hard and i havent watched a game yet and thought.....GET HOGUE OUT OF THERE!!!!!!! Not once have i thought that!

It's nothing against hogue, just word from inside the program is Nader is one of the best players on the team. If Vaugn doesn't come here, Hogue starts. Who knows, maybe he does anyway and Nader plays the 3 and Vaughn starts at sg bring Thomas off the bench. It could go any number of ways.

I'm assuming Hoiberg knew exactly what he was doing when he had SDW redshirt. He wouldn't have asked a kid to redshirt that he didn't have expectations for.

I also think this is very telling. It says that Fred at least believed that SDW would be a big contributor for us down the road. Whether that actually happens or not is probably entirely up to SDW and how bad he wants it?

It's hard to tell right now if SDW is good enough to provide us with some good minutes or not because all we see him in is garbage time. But if the way he plays in garbage time is how he plays all the time, I can see why he isn't playing more. He's way too careless with the ball. Most of that I just blame on him trying to do too much when he does get in, but he can't be turning it over like he does.

Good points. Turnovers and defense are likely why SDW isn't getting meaningful minutes yet, along with the fact that there are just a lot of good players in front of him. Nader will be another one added next year as he's big enough to play some 4 if needed, but a good enough outside shooter and athlete to play some 3 or even 2. It wouldn't be a surprise if he ends up a starter sooner than later. Another versatile player that will really help us next year, but I can't remember if he will be a sophomore or junior.

Because he's regarded as the best guy on the team, just like White and Clyburn were the years they had to sit out.

I would not be at all surprised to see someone else handling the point duties if Fred wants to get the best 5 on the floor.

In an interview the day Custer signed Fred said he could be a potential starter. Don't ask me how but he will see plenty of minutes.

Our schedule has not been conducive to developing our bench yet. I think Edozie would have played against Michigan had that game been just a few weeks later, but not week 2 of the season. I see SDW gaining the edge on Bluford for 8 - 12 minutes a game. It wouldn't surprise me to think of this team as being deep by the year's end.

Good point. That is why even blowout games like UMKC are useful for the staff to get a lead and try out different combonations prior to the Conference season. They also help develop confidence in the young players. Looked to me that SDW was gaining confidence in Mondays game, Monte too.

I have seen that Vaughn plays some pg at Findley too. Fred will put the 5 best players out on the court. Vaughn maybe play point (this assuming if he commits)?

Vaughn/Morris off bench
Thomas
Hogue
Nader
Niang

or

Morris
Thomas
Vaughn
Nader/Hogue
Niang

This is a ridiculousy good problem to have. McKay, Hogue, Long, Custer, Edozie, SDW off the bench. So many ways to go.

If Vaughn comes here I think we will see him take the ball up a lot. He plays some 1 in high school, and Fred loves letting the most talented player on the court take the ball up.

I think the PT Custer gets will depend on how well he can play the off guard position.

I think Fred will give Custer every chance to back up Morris wanting to develop him to play along side Morris in future years.

If Vaughn signs SDW will be looking at being the forth wing playing the 2 wing positions and will likely see the 3 spot surrendering some minutes to our forwards with Nader and Hogue each able to play that spot beings we'll have 4 forwards fighting for minutes (Niang, Nader, McKay, and Hogue).

If SDW gets regular minutes next year he may need to take them away from Thomas.

I think Hogue is going to be the guy that everyone thinks is going to get replaced, but doesn't. He does many things that don't always get noticed.

Way up there
He's also the only PG besides Morris.

Good point but Fred has rolled with 1 or fewer PG's every year he's been here. Not saying Custer won't get on the floor but Fred has shown he'd rather let a guy like Niang bring the ball up than throw a young PG on the floor who isn't ready. If Custer (or any other fr at/coming to ISU) wants to get on the floor early, look no further than Matt Thomas. He proved himself has a defender and rebounder, if Custer brings that, he'll see the floor.

As far as SDW, he's just not there physically yet. I think we could see him contribute next year but pry more likely as a jr and sr. I think he'll be a good Cyclone, just might have to wait his turn.

I feel comfortable with everyone off the bench in the first half of games except the last two last night. KJ looks like he is not playing as much team ball as the rest and Ellerman is Ellerman, although he has five fouls to give. I am sure both will get better while practicing against the rest of the team. Perhaps having good players makes tougher practices and better player development. CPR may have had that problem this year in player development. By the way, the bench is much deeper this year.
