I have no connection to this case whatsoever and I have no opinion one way or the other about anyone's guilt or innocence. I didn't know a lot of details about the case so I googled "Tom Lyons farmer" and came up with this investigative report by msnbc.com:
Was farmer's death cold blood or self-defense? - Crime reports- msnbc.com
There is a lot of information in the report about the case that I had never heard before. The report makes very interesting and compelling reading.
Yeah, they did a segment on Dateline.
IMO this was a case of two very headstrong ego driven guys in a big p****** match. Heemstra was more of a squirly money grubbing type and Lyon more of a good 'ole boy carry a big stick type.
My guess is that Heemstra thought he could back Lyon down with his gun, but really had his options limited when Lyon didn't back down. Maybe because it was small town, and superficial concerns about what gossip would be, Heemstra didn't wan't Lyon going around telling everyone what a weak **** he was.
One thing I have noticed in my many years in this state is that the further south you go, the more unique ways people settle disputes. I know a guy in northern MO who screwed some people over financially and they burned his house down. Maybe that's what Heemstra should have done.
