If TJ is ultimately not hired I think we might be able to look back to the UNLV article as the primary reason. It was likely very embarrassing that this appeared to be a done deal so quickly. I imagine JP might now be slowing things down and presenting a pool of candidates to the President. It would not go over well to the larger University if it appears there was absolutely no attempt made to consider a diverse pool because most hiring situations in higher education require that there be an opportunity to consider a broad pool of candidates. Ultimately, TJ will probably be hired. But the timing of that UNLV article likely made JP at least show that he had considered other possibilities.
Caller and Murph and Andy bagging on TJ, caller "all unlv does is shoot 3's and play little defense." He basically described isu bball under Fred.
This thread is now completely off the rails.
Speaking of which, I sent one in a few rebate receipts last week, and already got them in the mail today! I did the same last fall and didn't get them until late January.Great, we'll get an 11% mail-in rebate on our next coaching contract.
I wondered if it was a trial balloon to see how fan base reacted. If TJ is ultimately not hired I think we might be able to look back to the UNLV article as the primary reason. I never get mine, but for some reason i get them for a guy on the other side town. I would look him up and see if he gets mine, but his rebates are bigger...Speaking of which, I sent one in a few rebate receipts last week, and already got them in the mail today! Does anyone consider that in the age of Zoom etc that some of the interviews could have gone on a while ago when the seasons were still going on and maybe this sped up the process?
Didn't say it was a good idea. Just said I wonder if that is what happened. That would be about the worst idea ever.
Well, if this is true, and I think it’s likely that it is, I will absolutely support TJ and be hopeful.
I guess what disappoints me is the appearance or suggestion by this hire that after years of work and some success with Cyclone athletics, Iowa State is still not much of a destination that would attract coaches. McD was local. Fred had a history with the school. TJ has a history. Maybe Jamie sees that connection as a way to get a hometown discount. I appreciate JP’s fiscal responsibility, but it doesn’t yield a lot of excitement. On the other hand, Texas spends an inordinate amount on coaches with largely the same or less outcome as Iowa State, so I guess I prefer Jamie’s strategy.
I was wrong about Fred’s hire being a bad idea back in the day. I’m looking forward to being even more wrong about TJ’s hiring (hopefully).
I read the word "leak" so many times in your post that I now have to go to the bathroom.A lot of people could have been motivated:
- UNLV AD could have leaked. If TJ is the guy, then they negotiate from a stronger place. Especially if it appears he was the only serious candidate.
- UNLV employee could have leaked to damage TJ's standing as head coach. UNLV fans will question TJ's loyalty to move on after only 2 years. Also, if TJ remains coach, it will make recruiting harder.
- Someone at ISU could have leaked. If someone was very pro-TJ they could have leaked to reduce the number of candidates. If a P5 head coach was interested, they might be less likely to throw their name in the hat if the search is basically over. Also a current coach would be concerned their name could be leaked.
- TJ's people could have leaked. Many of same reasons as above.
TJ wouldn't be at the top of my list. But if he is the guy, I would rather have the process wrapped up in the first couple days vs. extending out a week or 2. All Jamie would have to say is "TJ has been at ISU over 10 years and during that time I observed one of the sharpest young coaches in the country. Yada, Yada, Yada. "
Like any job hire, having a personal knowledge of a candidate can go a long way.
In Ames?I guess it’s been long enough but told they had lunch together today in an appropriate themed restaurant for St. Patrick’s Day. Doubt TJ’s here for spring break.
