Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'm glad ISU made the final 5 list. I have to be honest though, after reading the Trib article, I'm also a little concerned about his "mentor" situation. Sometimes those situations and whatever "arrangements" may be involved can come back to bite the school in the *** a year or two after the recruit is done playing. I want to believe that ISU would not be stupid enough to get involved in such a situation, but.....

I am a big believer in second chances, but I agree! I am a little surprised that a quality player like Rashad Vaughn would allow himself to be influenced and mentored by Kaffey if the implications in the Tribune article are correct. The article states, “ Kaffey, 27, pleaded guilty in 2004 to first-degree aggravated robbery. In the case, Kaffey and another man were charged with pulling up to a playground in Brooklyn Center in a purple Dodge and pistol-whipping one victim with the butt of a gun. A second victim, court records showed, was hit several times on the back of the head as he tried to put his infant into a car. According to the complaint, they took roughly $250 and a cellphone.â€￾

Whether the implications in the article are comprehensively accurate or not, one point is crystal clear. Rashad or any impressionable young player in America would benefit enormously from the exposure and guidance they would receive under Fred Hoiberg. There is not a finer coach in America and I count it a privilege to be sit in the stands and witness what is going on here at Iowa State! Go Cyclones!

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Dear Rashad,

I don't know what to say, really. Three months to the biggest decision of your life. All comes down to April 16, and either, you come to ISU, or we're gonna crumble. Inch by inch, play by play. Until we're finished. We're in hell right now, Rashad. Believe me. And, we can stay here, get the **** kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time.

Now I can't do it for ya, I'm too old. I look around, I see these young posters and I think, I mean, I've made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I've ****** away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who's ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know, when you get old, in life, things get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of life.

But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff. You find out life's this game of inches, so is basketball. Because in either game - life or basketball - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second.

On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the ******* difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying! I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life anymore it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that's what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You've got to look at Coach Hoiberg, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. Your gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it comes down to it your gonna do the same for him. That's a team, Rashad, and either, we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's basketball Rashad, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

Cheers,
Luther

Dear Rashad,

If you're holding this letter you already know. The house has been boarded up. The doors. The windows. Everything. We're at the Comfort Inn. Room 112. I love you.

I just went full site on my phone to like this.

And out of all these open letters, funny or serious, this is the only one Rashad should read.
