I should add the reason the newel post has the white vinyl ball on it is the parrot used to chew on the original and destroyed it.
Our friends live in a 100+ year old Victorian in the historic district of Ames; their front door opens up to a long stairway on the right going up the inside of the north wall of the house. It's the original stairs, with a curve at the bottom and a beautiful wood railing and newel post, which has been loose since before they bought it in 1984-85. They have left it that way as an homage to "It's a Wonderful Life".

That made me think of the stairway inside Downton Abbey.....I remember seeing that for the first time and thinking, "How frickin long would it take to make that stuff?" No power tools then, of course, and every one was exactly the same. Sure makes me appreciate true craftsmanship, kinda like GR8's dad.

I received my first dumb rating today. How is it possible that I waited that long for a dumb rating? Maybe it's more of an "even dumber than usual" rating.

The staircase, in all its glory:

Do they get tired of people making wishes and throwing rocks through their windows?
