best choice available. lots of people wanted sandberg simply because of the name. quade did a great job with the guys down the strech and earned a shot. i think the cubs will be about a .500 team next year. there's some good pieces, just need to keep the young guys moving on up through the system.

Girardi is a good manager because he has an enormous pay roll. Notice these guys like Joe Torre and Girardi are not really that great before they get that huge payroll?

Toronto is baseball hell. Good luck with that one Ryno, if thats where you go.

A Cubs fan saying this is completely ridiculous.

33 seasons, 21 in their retractable dome, 5 division pennants, 21 seasons with 80 wins or more and a World Series championship... while playing in the same division as the Yankees.

I'm a Cubs fan, but Toronto is much more of a winning team than the Cubs. Sure a game at Wrigley is more fun for a fan, but I'm guessing players and managers want to win. Toronto has won much more in their 33 years, especially since the dome, than the Cubs.

That they have. I always enjoy Toronto's success, at least back in the day.

Sure, they struggle now in the open-checkbook days, but they used to routinely be one of the most talented and successful franchises in baseball.

What? I'm talking about right now. They have to compete with the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. Tell me how much of a shot they have to win the division every year?

How much of a shot did the Rays have while they were building, but there they are now each season.

My gut tells me this will end badly for us. When we hire nondescript guys like Quade, we tend not to get real far.

Just wondering why you threw that in? Also, since the strike in 1994, Toronto has done about as little as any team in the league. Zero playoff appearences, and really even not coming that close in any year.

If it ends badly it will be because we don't have enough talent to win, not because Mike Quade is the manager.

For the people that want Torre or Girardi can I ask why? It's not that hard to manage when you have the payroll of the Yankees,

Girardi is a good manager because he has an enormous pay roll. Notice these guys like Joe Torre and Girardi are not really that great before they get that huge payroll?

Girardi managed for one season (I know, small sample size) prior to the Yankees. He had a Marlins team with a $15 million payroll (not a typo) and had them in the thick of the wild card race late in the season, winning NL manager of the year in the process.

Which means we'll do this again in two years. Or go on a spending spree. Or both.

So many guys have a good interim run and amount to nothing in the full-time job. A good interim run really means nothing for future success.

I guess this isn't real impressive to me. I'll back him, because he's our guy, but he's underwhelming.

Marlins fire Girardi, hire Braves coach Gonzalez - MLB - ESPN

I don't think Girardi is a bad manager. I didn't mean for it to come off like that, but I also don't think he's going to be worth what it costs to get him. Unlike football or basketball where a new coach can make a ton of difference, a manager really doesn't have that big of an effect in baseball. I'm confidant that Quade can do just as good of job as Girardi, especially with the team the Cubs are going to be fielding next season.

Good stuff. In addition to that, I am willing to bet that, given the option, most up and coming managers would rather be in Chicago with the Cubs where people care about baseball than Toronto with the Blue Jays where people care about hockey.

You know what means less than a good interim run? Minor league success, and yet people want Sandberg to get the job.
