People shouldn't look too much into Iowa's week one performance because of how young and inexperienced they are and they are still working on their new passing offense.

Iowa had something like 8 or 9 trips into NIU territory and had 4 trips into the red zone and only scored 9 points in those 4 trips. You could tell the passing game was off, there were missed blocks on WR screens, missed reads by Vandenberg and the WRs and missed blocks by some of the new starters on their OL. Those are all things that can be cleaned up as the weeks go on. Their running game and run blocking looked great and their RBs could have had more yards if they would have read their blockers better, another thing that will improve. Their defense looked better than expected. They only gave up about 200 yards of offense and that includes giving up a 73 yard run.

Iowa State looked good in the season opener, at least after the rough start. Running game is good again. The key was winning the turnover battle and Jantz making smart throws after his first Interception. The pass defense looked pretty good But Tulsa was able to run the ball on ISU and gave up a horrible 10 ypc to their top runner.

I think Vandenberg plays better at home. Both teams are able to run the ball effectively. All else being equal, If I had to pick someone right now I would pick Iowa to win by 1 or 2 points just because it is at Kinnick and that is a very tough place to play. It wil come down to turnovers and special teams. I will predict Iowa 26 -ISU 24 (a missed FG early in the game comes back to haunt them)

...

C'mon man- you're absolutely right on this, but do you REALLY think that they'll get their 'high-powered Texas offense' figured out in 7 days? I mean, they couldn't even score a TD except in garbage time at the end of the game. If we were playing them in November, maybe I'd buy that argument, but not the second game of the season.

I get it - we're not supposed to be dominant, we're ISU...well F that!!! We are getting better, we have amazing coaches and players, and EICC looked like complete crap. ISU 35-17

it's not really garbage time when it's a close game, and the starters for both teams are still playing.

I was in Chicago putting in some quality time with the in laws this weekend and saw the game in person. The Hawks looked completely awful, and if this game was at Jack Trice I'd be predicting a blowout win for the Clones. But it's back at Kinnick, and for whatever reason Vandenberg is a much better QB at home.
I think ISU is a better team this year, but I also think that homefield advantage is huge in this rivalry. I'll take ISU 27-23 as Steele Jantz confounds the Iowa D again.

I know this won't happen because it is in Kinnick, and this rivalry always seems tight, but I would love a shulacking similar to 40+-14-.... Payback for the painful first to years under CPR in the rivalry!!!!!

Poor choice of words...point was they were DAMN lucky to have escaped with the win - even my HOK, um, friends (?) said they looked terrible. I just don't think they figure out a way to purge the demons by Saturday.

I believe that NIU is better than Tulsa. Of the four teams being mentioned in this thread, NIU was the only one getting votes for the Top 25. Iowa will be better this week at Kinnick. I think ISU is gonna be in for a fight. Its an in-state rivalry, we won last year, and the Hawks are probably a little embarrassed about their performance last weekend, and will be looking to prove something to their fanbase. Plus, their new offensive coordinator obviously is not as conservative as his predecessor. There is no way Ken OKeefe runs in that situation, IMO.

Whoever wins the turnover battle will win this, but I think that will be the good guys. ISU 27 - Iowa 17.

Iowa was in the game last year for two reasons. Our mistakes, and McNutt. We are better than we were last year, they are not as good as they were last year. If we execute our plays on offense, we are winning. Our defense can handle that offense.

After watching the Iowa game, I completely disagree that NIU is better then Tulsa. I think the ONLY reason they were receiving votes is because they had a 9-game win streak going into the season. Their defense is not bad, and is probably better then Tulsa's D, but Tulsa offense is WAYYYYY better then NIU's. NIU is extremely young and inexperienced when it comes to their offense.

You really can't put it any more simply than that.

Iowa State looks quite a bit better, after one game, than we did over the course of last season. In Iowa's case, the exact opposite is true.

I could careless if it's 2 -0 ISU as long as we win. Tulsa will win many games this year, but that doesn't matter, Saturday is a new day.
