Power Conference schools being forced to sign a contract or risk membership

And so it begins...

If the NCAA loses, I could really see them just getting rid of redshirts instead of letting people play for five years.

It will suck for everyone else, but sometimes one person ruins it for everyone

This isn’t happening but the only school that anyone would blink an eye being left out on your list is Colorado and that’s really only thanks to the current Deion bump
Then what is the criteria for the schools that are going to be taken? You have to have enough teams spread through the country that insures that fans are not going to lose interest in college football. But if you say, "Maryland, Rutgers, Minnesota you are in, because you are currently in the B10, then you are going to leave out schools that are a better fit, like KSU, Colorado and others. They are going to take Vanderbilt, but tell ISU, sorry, you don't make it, even though by every means necessary, you have the better program, except you are not currently in the SEC and Vanderbilt is.

If the ncaa loses, will there even be a 5 year limitation? Maybe Becht will finish off his twenty year career as isu's starting qb in 2043.

I could see the limitation falling at some point, but I don’t think it will be because of this lawsuit. It seems like this lawsuit is really just challenging the idea of redshirts.

If the NCAA loses, there is nothing that will say they have to give everyone 5 years, they just have to make it equal. And I think they should do that by getting rid of the redshirt and saying you only have 4 years

They were only briefly called up and had been D1AA programs within a few years of their inclusion. Wazzu, Oregon State, and Temple had been long time members of big time college sports. It's not the same, IMO.

True — USF doesn’t have the “history.”

I know a few USF grads who feel screwed, though, that they did the hard work to earn a power invite and then had the rug pulled.

Yeah, I'm not saying it doesn't suck for those guys. I'm sure it stings.

But it's way worse for Wazzu and Oregon State fans. And for the point I'm making about major ranks actually getting more inclusive over time, I don't think they're particularly relevant as a data point. It was a unique situation.

Because schools aren’t going to be taken due to a super league not happening anytime in the near future

Define the near future? The media contracts for all leagues come to end around 2030 to 2034, schools will already be in place when they start the new media deal, so a couple of years, we will see the intentions of the B10 and SEC along with ESPN and FOX.

There is no judge who will sign off on more than 5 years of eligibility if there is a lawsuit for it. If Judge Wilkins is worried about walkons and roster limits, hundreds of thousands of high schoolers being denied a chance at a college education will have the same affect

I don’t think any movement towards a super league happens in the next 5 years

Pretty much we are at a point in which an organization cannot have rules that are enforceable on the volunteers participating under that organization.

It's like if I decided that I don't want to follow the rules set forth by the racing organization I volunteerly race under and I sue them because "they aren't the boss of me".

About the time most of the media contacts are up, or close to being up. I would agree, that is when it all going to happen. But the closer we get to the end of the decade, the more it's going to be out in the news.

Obviously different person, but I would say that I am less interested in college football now and watch significantly less of it mostly because of the changes that have been made (conference realignment, nil, transfer rules, etc.). It makes sense that I would lose some interest compared to when I was little/right out of college, but not this much. If these changes hadn’t taken place, I don’t think my interest would have dropped nearly as much

I’ve also reduced my athletic donations to the bare minimum and could easily see myself dropping my season tickets and giving up my fandom all together if we continue to move away from amateurism and the “student” athlete. And that’s something I never would have expected if you had told me that when I first got season tickets. My goal was to be one of those people who were recognized at the game for having season tickets for decades
See ya.

Maybe eligibility rules should not be time restricted but contingent on academic achievement.

Compared to 20-30 years ago, being declared academically ineligible today is about the same odds as winning the lottery.

If higher standards for semester & cumulative credit hour, gpa and degree program requirements were established maybe Presidents and AD's could take back oversight of college sport.

Part of the college sport fix is for the NFL & NBA to establish a valued minor league option like baseball.

Exactly.

IMO, the states passed the NIL laws because they believed it would give the colleges in their states a competitive advantage. So why not make laws about various aspects of eligibility for college sports, if a state deemed it would bring an advantage to the colleges in that state?

This is why, at some point, the NIL laws have to be challenged in court. IMO, they are a huge, unconstitutional overstep of government into the affairs of a private organization where participation is completely voluntary.

@Nolaeer, random aside but I PM'd you about something unrelated/a trip out to WV this fall.

Also wondering if you (or anyone else here) can recall the username for the other gracious WV fan that offered to host Cyclones at their tailgate the times we've played out there. John and Carol from South Carolina I believe. I'm probably slightly off, but want to say his username was something along the lines of "sunscdog" or something close to that, but I'm not finding it via the search function. Would like to try to connect with him too if anyone knows/has/can figure out the exact username.

Thanks!

What if those state laws are unconstitutional? *IF* the SEC and Big Ten schools actually sign this contract, it would indicate to me that the schools/NCAA are ready to go to court against the state NIL laws. Barring the NCAA and the schools getting an anti-trust exemption from Congress, it's really the only play they have left.
